Eight hardy souls braved the winds and continuous threat (and reality) of rain today on Amherst Island and were rewarded with some good sightings of a variety of birds, many of which were waterfowl. Highlights included 2 Black Scoter and 8 White-winged Scoter, neither particularly common in this neck of the woods. We also encountered a flock of about 1000 Greater Scaup (so they have arrived), within in which were a few Lesser Scaup, Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Redhead. All 3 regular mergansers were seen as were 2 Horned Grebe. A single Bonaparte's Gull was the 'highlight' of gull scene and the only shorebirds encountered were 6 Killdeer, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Dunlin and a late Spotted Sandpiper. Also seen in the Owl Woods were 4 American Woodcock. Passerines were hard to locate due to the high winds but included Purple Finch, House Finch, Blue-headed Vireo and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
