I am having a little difficulty compiling xorg-xserver 1.7.2/1.7.3. On
execution, the configure script yields the following:-
checking for GL... configure: error: Package requirements (glproto = 1.4.9 gl
= 7.1.0) were not met:
No package 'gl' found

the configure --help gives:-
--disable-glut enable GLUT library [default=enabled if source

I can't speak for functionality, but I believe the licenses differ, so
it may be something to consider. As for

That's exactly the problem - gl.pc is provided by Mesa.

I always use the Mesa version. The book mentions the MesaLibs and Mesa
Demos packages - to that, I add the MesaGLUT
