then control tab to the read page
now tab through this to plain text
it is a check box so use the space bar

I have a folder that I use first letter navigation on. Unfortunately,
something has been changed on the settings for this folder and whenever I
press the first letter of a file name, the computer puts me in a search box.
Does anyone know how to change back to the first letter navigation
Try going into folder options view, and its one of the last items at the
bottom of the list: automatically go to the search box.

All you really need to do if you just want to read it in clean text format,
is file menu, save as... and in the resulting dialogue, you can change the
save as combo box to just plain text only, or something like that depending
on your browser version, etc.
