AVG actually caught a trogen on my computer a couple of years ago and we removed
it without reinstalling XP but I'll have to ask my sighted husband how he did
it. He may have gone into safe mode.

In my experience the quickest waymay be to do a destructive Windows

Our list owner David, has suggested using a solution like Image for

 I
use Norton Ghost but you do need sighted help whilst it re-builds

Image for Windows apparently has a method people without sight can
 deploy.

It is not much help for you right now but I suggest that once your system

Hi Debbie,

As someone else has suggested, Super Anti-Spyware is the best way to
remove

the Trojan without sighted assistance.

If the program still doesn't remove it, that's when you should default to
sighted assistance, as you will have to reboot in safe mode and run the
program, or delete the file, if you know where it is.

I would also suggest you look in your MSConfig and in the start up and
services tab to see if this Trojan has the ability to be stopped before it
starts up.

If it's in there, try unchecking the box so it doesn't start up
automatically, then run the program after you reboot the computer.

To get to MSConfig, go to your start menu, press the letter R for the run
dialog box, and type the word msconfig and press enter.

The Microsoft Configuration window will pop up, so control+tab over to the
services and start up tabs, and go through the programs that are starting
up
automatically. If you see the file that's causing the problem, uncheck
it,

and tab to the apply button, then back to the ok button and press the
spacebar.

You'll be asked to reboot the computer, so do so.

Once the computer reboots, try running the programs again to see if it
removes the virus or Trojan.

Lastly, to back up the Outlook Express messages and folders, as the person
said, go to the directory that was specified, and what I do, is copy the
entire folder, namely that Outlook Express folder, onto a media that will
hold the contents.

It will probably be really large, so you'll probably have to use a DVD or
external drive.

Once you reformat and install Windows onto the drive again, just copy the
folder back to where you got it in the first place, and everything will
magically reappear.

It's as easy as that, provided, of course, you're re-installing XP again.
If you move up to Vista, or downgrade to Me or 2000, then I don't believe
this method of restoring your mail will work, but don't quote me on that.

Let us know how you make out.

I don't know anything about Karen's Replicator so does this program
automatically back up files. Because I don't know how to back up email

I hope somebody else can give you some better news but remedies to get
rid

of Trojans often rely on deleting files in Windows Safe Mode. That is a
version of windows where minimal features are loaded. There is no way
that I
am aware of that you can use a screen reader in safe Mode as I believe
no
audio drivers are loaded. I would be very interested if someone can
point

out that I am wrong.

Whatever course you take to get rid of this Trojan I think you are going
to

need sighted help. I have had a couple of problems like these over the
years and I am afraid to say I found the help desks of Norton and AVG
pretty

impotent . You can easily spend hours and hours trying to sort this out.
In my experience the quickest waymay be to do a destructive Windows
re-install so your priority now should be backing up all the data you
need

including emails etc.

Our list owner David, has suggested using a solution like Image for
Windows as an escape route for problems like these. I think he is right,
I
use Norton Ghost but you do need sighted help whilst it re-builds
Windows.
Image for Windows apparently has a method people without sight can
deploy.

It is not much help for you right now but I suggest that once your system
is

restored to perfect health and you have everything how you want it use a
program like Image for Windows to freeze this as an image. Then you can
always go back to this perfect state which gives peace of mind. Use
Karen's

Replicator available on the owners site to keep all your important data
backed up separately so that these can be resored also once you put the
perfect image back in.

2008-11-15 Thread Chris Hallsworth
About Windows Safe Mode: It's not just the audio drivers that are not
loaded, your graphics drivers aren't loaded too. So even if you could use a
hardware synthesizer or a Braille display your screen reader probably won't
load anyway, or if it did it would run with problems.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Trying to remove a Trojan Horse.

2008-11-15 Thread David Griffith
I guess you should try super Anti Spyware as suggested but this will not be
able to remove Trojans which are pre-loading into memory at start up. Once
loaded into memory the file loading the Trojan is write protected and it is
impossible to delete. This is why you need to go into safe mode where no
drivers and start up files including Trojans will be loaded into memory.
Still it is worth giving SuperAnti Spyware a try to see if it is a Trojan
which is not loading into memory.

If you do need to rebuild Windows then you need to copy your Outlook .dbx
files which contain all your emails. I have not used Outlook Express for
years but from memory you can find these under Documents and Setting, then
the folder with your name on, then local settings, then application data,
identities , Microsoft and then Outlook Express. There may be an identity
folder with a load of numbers in the filename. You may also have set your
folder options to show hidden folders.

Once you have copied your dbx files you should be able to restore then in
OE. You had better check with some one else on the list how to do this in OE
as I say I have not used it for years. I remember there is however a way of
restoring the .dbx files.

Karen's Replicator is a good simple and accessible backup data program
available from the Jaws User Home Page Programs. Download it and give it a
try. I think there is a tutorial on it as well done by David F.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Trying to remove a Trojan Horse.

Hi all,

I really need help with this very badly.

I have an older version of Norton (Internet Security version 2006) and
that
may be the problem. But I can't seem to remove this 1 Trojan horse.
Does

anyone have any suggestions?

I want to take Norton off and put avira Anti Virus program on, but I
believe

you have to have someone sighted to help with the Norton removal tool.

I've even tried doing a system restore, but it failed and I've had the
problem with system restore long before I got this Trojan Horse.

I'm using Windows XP and Jaws 7.0.

By the way, the only reason I didn't upgrade Norton is because I heard
that

the later versions were not Jaws user friendly.

Thank you very much for your help.

Debbie

Re: [Blind-Computing] Trying to remove a Trojan Horse.

2008-11-15 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Debbie,

As someone else has suggested, Super Anti-Spyware is the best way to remove
the Trojan without sighted assistance.

The Microsoft Configuration window will pop up, so control+tab over to the
services and start up tabs, and go through the programs that are starting up
automatically. If you see the file that's causing the problem, uncheck it,
and tab to the apply button, then back to the ok button and press the

Thanks for the link, but I'm starting to get very confused. Some of you
are saying that I can use this program and others are saying I'm going to
need sighted help. So sorry for my being confused, but I really am.

I do thank you guys for your help.

The program is Super Anti Spyware, and it is completely JAWS accessible.
It removes all kinds of malware including Trojans, so install it and give
it a try. You can download the free version at:

So you didn't have to have sighted help? And, where can I get this
program?

I hope somebody else can give you some better news but remedies to get
rid
of Trojans often rely on deleting files in Windows Safe Mode. That is
a
version of windows where minimal features are loaded. There is no way
that I
am aware of that you can use a screen reader in safe Mode as I
believe no
audio drivers are loaded. I would be very interested if someone can
point

out that I am wrong.

Whatever course you take to get rid of this Trojan I think you are
going to
need sighted help. I have had a couple of problems like these over
the
years and I am afraid to say I found the help desks of Norton and AVG
pretty
impotent . You can easily spend hours and hours trying to sort this
out.
In my experience the quickest waymay be to do a destructive
Windows
re-install so your priority now should be backing up all the data you
need

including emails etc.

Our list owner David, has suggested using a solution like Image for
Windows as an escape route for problems like these. I think he is
right, I
use Norton Ghost but you do need sighted help whilst it re-builds
Windows.
Image for Windows apparently has a method people without sight can
deploy.

It is not much help for you right now but I suggest that once your
system is
restored to perfect health and you have everything how you want it use
a
program like Image for Windows to freeze this as an image. Then you
can
always go back to this perfect state which gives peace of mind. Use
Karen's
Replicator available on the owners site to keep all your important
data
backed up separately so that these can be resored also once you put
the

perfect image back in.

Debbie:

There are all kinds of Trojan Horse
viruses out there so one method doesn't remove them all unfortunately. What
is the name of the Trojan Horse you are trying to remove?

We have one such beast we can't seen to get rid of either. Anyone out there
heard of win32/zbot.gen!c? Did a search on google and still can't figure
out how to remove this one.
