Hi Sly,
Once you start, you will see a gather button. Tap that then choose the
coordinates to mine for food/wood. Once you complete this, the spirit guide
will guide you further.

To get food (at least initially), you'll need to go to the gather
button, then tap on the bushes, this will give you berries which you can
use as food. It gets more complicated later on, but it's all pretty
much self explanatory once you get the hang of it.
