I don't know what you mean by safe. I cut my own grass with one for years before I got married. The best way I found was to divide the yard into little squares and finish one and move on to the next square. You'll look like you're dancing because you have to swing a foot around to make sure

Use a mover for years. First I boxed in the flowers and other areas I didn't want cut with landscape timbers. and cut the grass north to south and east to west as one would use a sweeper. They tell me the yard looked good. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Tempting as it is to cut the lawn in bare feet so you can feel where you have been I strongly recommend against it. After that safety mostly depends on not running over something else besides your feet. I suppose one cannot be absolutely certain about that, if you have a child used to leaving
