This system is not completely up to date.
Please remove these lines in /etc/asound.conf
pcm.default pulse
ctl.default pulse
or just remove the file.
Also, speech dispatcher should now be at version 0.8.8, so check in
/etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc that you have exactly this line:

Now I'm going to check vlc but did want to say putting the dmix line and
the dsnoop line in /etc/pulse/default.pa enabled orca to work. Speech
sounds like it's coming through a napkin held close to a comb when orca
starts up and when orca shuts down but once inside orca I think seems to
