I suspect I am misunderstanding the question, but I use a cheap/free debian
tool called "recordmydesktop" to, umm, record my desktop (video/audio),
if that's of any use to you.

Should work with any version of Linux that has a BASH shell. It has a
BASH script installer. You need to be careful to download the tar.gz
rather than the zipfile.

Have you tried kazam?
I used it once - it was extremely easy to use; the audio of the recording was a 
bit low, but I didn't make any configuration changes, so it might be possible 
for you to tweak it (or you could tweak it afterwards).

It's not open source but it is free; I use DebugMode's Wink on Linux
Mint 17 AMD64. .
