We have a 5108R host on Aventurin{e} that is having difficulty importing
CA's for a Comodo cert.
It's not our first rodeo with SSL, but it is our first time encountering
this problem.
The GUI simply says "Could not add the certificate authority to the
certificate authority file."

I just checked. 5106R, 5107R and 5108R are all missing that handler.
5207R, 5208R and 5209R have it.
Weird. No idea what happened there. I'll add it to base-apache
