Having recently returned to the fold ( 3 2002's twenty years ago), I
find myself driving the 88 318 I bought for a winter/daughter home from
college car, more than my pumped up Toyota MR2 turbo. I think this ole
boy needs an M car. If anyone can direct me to a site or explain the
difference between M3, M5, and M6 without, and I know this is hard,
waxing poetic, maybe I can make it to Gingerman in time for the first
school.

Dude....that's *my* car! =) Well, if you consider 35% tinted windows, factory
wing, and a nice a/d/s/ audio setup making my M3 a pimpmobile.. =)

Seriously, those blue lights are stupid. I like how they mention a coating
that will produce whiter light. Last I checked, only phosphour coatings in
fluorescent bulbs can make a difference in spectrum. Coatings on halogen bulbs
are just filters. They can't possibly add anything to the available light from
the filament, ya know? What they are doing is filtering everything else other
than the blue part of the spectrum...not good.

I have the Feb 99 Roundel here on my desk, and the want ads show

1988 M3, 34k miles, a couple mods, in FL - $18,995
1989 M3, 41k miles, all stopck, in NY - $17,500
1989 M3, 67k miles, a couple mods, CA car in MI - $17,500
1989 M3, 26k miles, all orig, in AB - $24,000

I always look for these in the want ads, just to make sure they are out
there when I hit the lottery. :)

E30 M3: no experience with this one. I like the looks of a nicely maintained
red or black one, but don't like the interior. Some diehards call this the
true M car and that the E36 ('95 - '99) isn't. I've heard that the E30 is a
bit more edgy and not as refined as the E36.

E36 M3: Nice small, agile car. Great looks that earned the whole E36 "design
of the decade" award. Crisp handling, steering to die for, quick, and
powerful. 240HP. Downside? No longer in production.

E46 M3: Available sometime at the end of the year...I think. More refined...a
bit heavier. 340HP Like the E30 enthusiasts looking at the E36, I don't like
the E46 styling. YUK! It also has that power bulge in the hood. Yukko!

E39 M5: 400HP V8 cruise missle. Some have said that driving one is like
driving an M3 with oily feet. Heavier than the M3, of course, but definitely
more refined. Personally, I don't like the looks of the E39. I love the
previous generation 5 series save for the double round headlights.

Well, these are all my opinions. Of course, if you threw me a E39 M5 my way, I
might think differently, but I think there isn't an ugly line with the E36 M3.

Subject: [uuc] Re: <E30> ellipsoids

Ed,

That's what I did the first time...just break the plastic tabs off the unit that's
being replaced. The heat works like a charm though...

Don't you cook things when you run the 80W or 100W bulbs? I've used 100W bulbs
before in other lights (big Cibie driving lights), and things have a tendency to
overheat and deteriorate. They are nice while they last!

(See http://lighting.mbz.org/faq/ )

What I have done to improve the output of the standard 55W 9006/HB4 low beams is
to modify the 65W 9005/HB3 bulbs (the ones that go in the high beam units) by
trimming a little of the plastic here and there so that they fit in the low beam
(ellispsoid) units, with the assumption that all the affected components are
capable of handling the relatively slight increase in wattage. The plastic has to
be trimmed so that 1) the bulb fits in the lens/reflector housing, and 2) the plug
fits into the bulb's socket. It's a 5 or 10 minute operation with a dremel tool.
I've been running these for a year with no problems at all. The output is
noticeably better. According to Stern's lighting site, the 65W units put out 1700
lumens vs. the 1000 for the 55W bulbs!

One other difference, if I remember correctly, between the 9006/HB4 and the
9005/HB3 is that the 9006/HB4 has a shield (coating on the nose of the bulb
itself) of sorts. My assumption is that the absence of this shield is what causes
a noticeably intense area of light in the very center of the pattern when the
9005/HB3 is used in the ellipsoid units, i.e. they're brighter overall, but
especially right in the center of the pattern.

Pheonix Microlite kit. This same kit is $600 from them(310-364-5219 Bob is a
great help) comes with a life time warranty. The reason I know this is because
I have the same kit from them(phoenix Microlite). So I dont understand why
Turner would sell this kit for so much more??But if I am wrong Phoenix
Microlite sells a great Xenon kit $600.So one way or the other Happy

The BMW/Ferrari club dyno session is still on for this Sunday. I spoke
with the guys from Dynapack and they are pulling one of their 800hp dynos
out of Hendrick Motorsport on their way up from North Carolina on Friday.
One of the company owners, a former Schnitzer or Alpina mechanic in
Germany, will be present to make sure the equipment is working properly and
will give some tips on tuning. I'm meeting with FNA's motorsport manager
tomorrow morning and will remind him to come on Sunday. SD (PS- to the
Ferrari folks....this dyno is capable of doing sequential gearbox
cars...roller dynos cannot. The F1 models should not be a problem)

I think it's the same one judging from the pictures from Rob Hatrak's euro
HID'ed car and the pictures on Turner's website. I think there are only two
kits in existence. One made by Bellof and the other one made by Phillips. The
Phillips one has that big fat power cable going to the lamp. The Bellof has
two smaller gauge wires going to the lamp.

FWIW,

The Honda guys have put together a fairly nice site that makes
arranging group deals easy and organized. It's sponsored by retailers,
so the prices are good and you know it's not gonna flop out at the
last minute. Their site doesn't seem to be at 100% right now, since
adding a new buy is failing, but I think you can add group buys that
aren't Honda/Acura. Maybe you can ask them to add a BMW option or
someone could write their own version.

The advantage of the site is that you can see exactly how it is
progressing, from both the retailer's point of view and the
purchasers'.

If you are in the NJ area, I would check this out. I had the opportunity to see
the Dynopack dynos in action at the Sandlapper d-school at CMP this fall. Very
impressive piece of equipment and a phenomenally nice guy as the rep. He dyno'd
approx 30 cars (one run only) over the course of the weekend. I don't know much
about Dynos, but this setup seems to not have some of the same "issues" as the
other dynos out there.
