Re: [Boatanchors] Navigator and Heathkit A-1 Meters

2016-10-14 Thread rgroh
Probably not (well, other than putting a better meter in!!).  I also find the
meter banging around to be a real PITA but, in my mental musings, I haven't
thought of any way to tame the beast. You could use an RC network (sort of a
slow attack quick discharge) but that would take some fiddling around with.
Basically you have, in the meter, a mechanical system with a 'huge' amount
of overshoot.  You hit the meter with a quick shot of current and it goes way
over and then settles back to the right reading.  The ONLY way to cure that is
to slow down the current rise. Then, of course, you have to worry about the
what happens when the drive current goes down - you don't want to have too much
'hang'.  Plus the next part of the problem is that meter resistance is fairly
low - so you are limited in how much R (as part of your RC network) you can put
in series with meter.  So the R needs to be a low value.  Which means the C
needs to be big'ish. I thought about playing around with this on the bench but
... well, just one more thing I won't get to.

[Boatanchors] FS: NRI Model 70 Tube Tester $40 plus shipping.

2016-06-02 Thread rgroh
More goodies from the ham shack.  I've had this National Radio Institute model
70 Tube tester for a few years.  I have just refinished the wood case and,
since I have a couple of other tube testers, it is a good time to sell this
one. I can send a link to a web photo album to anyone who is interested. I have
used more than a few times over the years and certainly seems to get the job
done.  Not as comprehensive a check as a high end tester but adequate for sure.

Asking $40 plus shipping ( I would estimate shipping at less than $25 via UPS
Ground).  If you are interested, drop me a line.

[Boatanchors] FS: vintage 10M mobile AM VFO transmitter

2016-05-31 Thread rgroh
Yeah, I am a bit sentimental about this rig.  It dates from (I think) the
mid-1950's.  It was given to me by a friend (now SK) and was, in turn, given to
him by another local (i.e. Kansas City area) ham 'back in the day'. The
original article was in CQ Magazine, June 1950. The tube line up was 6AK5 to
6C4 to 12AQ5 final with 6AQ6 modulator (I think the 12V final was added in
1958).  A web-based photo album is available (email for the link - this list
won't pass through web links). I even have the original carbon mike which will
be included as well as a photo copy of the original CQ article and a photo of
the original schematic.

I would like to find someone who will keep this old gal going and not just tear
it down or whatever. I have way too many projects and want to find a good home
for this.

Price: $35 plus shipping (which I guesstimate should be less than $25 - US only
please).

Drop me a line if you are interested.

[Boatanchors] Just finished restoration of an EF Johnson TR switch

2016-05-18 Thread rgroh
Just had to crow about (finally) finishing restoration of a E.F.Johnson T-R
switch (#250-39).  It was really a minor restoration as basic unit was in
pretty good shape - the only marginal thing was the case exterior which was
originally a 'chromed' finish (not chrome but some sort of bright finish on
steel) which was flaking and not looking very good. I lightly sanded the
exterior to clean it and then spray painted it with Krylon black paint (it was
the only color I had!).
The repainting was 4 years ago (!! Yeah, I know ... pretty much a slacker on
this stuff) and it sat on the shelf until last week.  I finally grabbed it, put
it on the bench, replaced the ac line cord with a 3-wire only (with ground) and
reformed the electrolytics.  Back up and running and looking good! Wish I could
put a photo in this posting but, if you want to see pics, drop me a line and
I'll send a link to a web album.

[Boatanchors] FS: Eico 377 audio generator - a very nice unit for restoration $25 plus shipping

2016-04-10 Thread rgroh
More cleaning up in the shack.  I have several audio oscillators and this Eico
377 is, unfortunately, surplus to my needs.  I say 'unfortunate' because it is
really clean and should be an excellent candidate for restoration.  Pictures
are in a web album:Eico 377 Photo Album

[Boatanchors] FS: One lot of hand held microphones

2016-04-07 Thread rgroh
Email is acting a bit odd today so hoping this get's through ok.
I am cleaning up the ham shack and, among many other items, I have many
microphones I will never use.  First batch is seven(7) handheld microphones -
to keep my work down, I am selling them as one lot. A picture and a brief
description are available in a pdf document - just email me and I will send the
file your way.  The lot includes two ElectroVoice HiZ dynamics (a 602 and a
600), a Turner 350 and a 360 ceramic, a Heathkit/Turner, a Japanese Imperial
DM-2 dynamic and a unknown brand (believe to be a low Z dynamic).  Haven't had
any opportunity to test any of these but believe they work fine.  Some have mic
connectors, some don't.

Price: $75 for all 7 plus shipping.   PayPal preferred but a personal check or
money order will get the job done too.

A nice Meissner Signal Shifter 9-1090 followed me home
from Hamcation in Orlando.

I believe it is the 1947 model just prior to the EX.

It includes the 160m tuned strip for the turret and
has been recapped and works. Not sure if I will keep
it yet.

It included the original manual with schematics ...
so I took photos of the cover and pages and posted
them here:

Hope this helps someone.

I'll also post the manual pics to Yahoo at the

[Boatanchors] GE Ham news

2015-11-23 Thread rgroh
Cleaning up the office and found 17 or so original copies of GE Ham News -
publication dates scattered from 1947 through the late 1950s. Interesting
reading but I would love to see them find a new home. Not sure about postage
cost but $7 via PayPal will certainly cover me.  If interested, just email me
and we'll get 'er done.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!
