At first when I read this, I thought, "Not a very good one." But apparently the A320 has a pretty good glide ratio for a jet -- around 17:1. Flying sailplanes is supposed to make anybody a better pilot because you gain a lot more experience with situations that don't happen with other aircraft. In this case, the big one was probably accelerated stalls, in which the high wing stalls during a turn and the plane falls back toward level. That's nowhere near as catastrophic as a full stall at low altitude, but it means you end up pointing somewhere other than where you intended, which makes it hard to put the plane down where you thought you were going to. Flight instructors pound into their students to always know exactly when you have enough airspeed and altitude to be able to glide back to the field... because many planes have been crashed by people who thought they could return after takeoff, but stalled out when trying to make the turn back toward it. BTW, the chief pilot of the company my USAir pilot friend used to work for was killed when he was doing a check ride with another pilot in a LearJet, practicing engine out on takeoff. Even when you know it's going to happen, it can kill you. Nick ___ http://www.mccmedia.com/mailman/listinfo/brin-l

I was just thinking that suffering a multiple engine failure on climbout from LaGuardia at too low an altitude to make it back to the airport would leave very few survivable landing options other than the Hudson, and ditching right by the 40th St pier was a really good call, all things considered. Apparently the ferries from the ferry terminal were on the scene quickly enough that most of the passengers didn't even get wet (which was a good thing, as 40-ish degree water is a recipe for pretty rapid hypothermia), and between the tugboats and HYPD harbor patrol, the situation was under control pretty quickly. Yeah, they freaked out half of Midtown, but all things considered, amazingly good piloting and thinking outside the box. :) ("A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is one after which they can use the plane again.") It is vital to recognize situations you control through your own resources and abilities, and situations you control only because circumstances allow you to control them .. because the actions you take may make those favorable circumstances unfavorable in the blink of an eye. -- Me ___ http://www.mccmedia.com/mailman/listinfo/brin-l

Re: airliner ditches in hudson river
Wow. One of my oldest good friends is a USAir pilot. I doubt he was at the controls because I think he's still flying 737s. Years ago, we were on short final to Allegheny County Airport when a hawk suddenly was filling our windscreen. From the right seat, John had the nose down faster than I could react. It's no fun to have to dive like that when you're already that close to the ground, but he did a great job of getting us away from the bird and back on the normal approach. I've always taken the flight attendants' safety instructions seriously, but... wow... "In the unlikely event of a water landing..." won't sound the same again for a while.
