I think even today most of the bars in Denmark can mix you a glass of
'half-and-half'. Depending on the bar, and the beers used for it, the
proportions may be well off 50-50. (I have heard that Old Gambrinus and
Hancock pilsner mix best around 75-25, or even 80-20). But I do think
that the traditional 'three threads' and other mixtures have disappeared
long time ago, if they ever were popular in Denmark.

So yes, mixing beers has an old and noble tradition.

I have occasionally brewed some really bitter or really black beers.
(Almost? by accident, some times). Although I like to drink those as
they are, I also use them for pepping up some less interesting
varieties.

No matter how you mix it,

   it will be beer anyway
