John:
Our German friends are more authoritative than me about the following:
Germany rebuilt after the Second World War, most of its cities, where
the buildings were bombarded and destroyed. In Berlin, and leaving
aside the polemical reconstruction of the Royal Palace (The Schloss),
which is not a literal reconstruction, and therefore, in a sense, no
one is pleased. Well, leaving that building aside, we have the Bau
Akademie, that was demolished (!!!) in the sixties by the DDR
Government, it is now being rebuilt, in the same place where it was.
It is one of the great buildings of the greatest architect of the XIX
C. in Europe: Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
In Spain, after the Spanish Civil War, General Franco underwent an
astonishing amount of reconstruction.
To a similar extent (But I do not have data at hand) France did the same.
And, we can state, that most of the countries undergo the
reconstruction of their historic buildings, in a literal way, because
they are part, a substantial part, of their identity.
What about the systematic reconstruction of the temples in Japan?.
