The weird thing is that 'tail -1 z.1' works, but 'tail -1 z.1 z.2' errors. If the form "-1" is depreciated, shouldn't it fail for the single file invocation also?

I'll grab version 6.10 and check it out.  Thanks.

If it is older than 5.90 please upgrade.  Your report implies that you
are probably running 5.2.1 from 2004.  This behavior was changed in
coreutils 5.90 in 2005.  The current stable release version is 6.10.
