This is not the bug. This behaviour occurs because '*' gets exploded
by the shell to the list of files in current directory. Try
expr 100 \* 1

Your shell is expanding the unquoted * in the current directory.
Try these:
$ expr 100 \* 1
$ echo expr 100 * 1
(to see what expr sees)
