Running `make check` on a virtual machine at 1und1.de is
failing for 5 tests:
FAIL: misc/nproc-avail

I added an strace for both runs.

Isn't this missing some of the larger context? df is just doing what
lots of other programs do: finding out what file systems one has,
and reporting
