The fix is to not define _FORTIFY_SOURCE on this platform. Done in
configure.ac.
I found another issue with gnu-diff from master;
if I do a (recursive) comparison of e.g.
f:\Cygwin64 -- the backed-up physical tree
and:
h:\Cygwin64 -- a mounted VDMK
