was not working for me under Solaris
10 so I have fortran variables (F77 FC) set to 'no' in config.site
so that they won't be used in the libtool tests. At the time I
thought that perhaps this was due to a lacking libtool feature rather
than a 'bug'.

That is quite a problem since this is an important header. It is
useful to consult config.log and see why this test fails.

it was determined that AIX ar did respect the environment variable
OBJECT_MODE=64 (apparently the easiest way to trigger a 64-bit build
under AIX), but perhaps a different option should be supplied to ar by

I seem to recall that with some versions of the MSYS shell 'test -x'

depending on it. Some systems don't support the notion of
'executable' files.

A longer term approach would be to encode the ABI into the .la files
so that .la files with the wrong ABI can be quickly skipped without
inspecting the associated library.

That sounds like a good plan. Unfortunately, libtool does not appear
, but libtool needs to work with what it is given.

So libtool is not working if there is no C++ at all?
