Nigel Horne reported that building shared libraries fails on Darwin 5.5
Power Macintosh with a libtool error.
It incorrectly detects that -single_module is supported (see below, the
compiler gave an error, but configure says yes)

Another problem is that the failure is not logged in config.log:

This is the relevant portion in configure (which comes from libtool.m4):

It is missing a >&5 redirect, and an exit status check.

a Darwin 5.5 Power Macintosh:
