The good news: Compiling m4 from git *does* install the examples.
However, they files are put into `/share/m4'; I still suggest
to change the target directory to `/share/doc/m4'.

Well, if you install from the source tarball, it's fine, of course.
However, I'm using openSuSE's m4 package, and it doesn't come with the
examples.  I'm rather sure if `make install' contained rules for
installing the example files, GNU/Linux distribution packages would
also provide them.

/share/doc/m4/examples

Basically yes, but I can't promise any time frame.  I guess that you
as the maintainer could fix that much faster than me...

would you suggest that the examples be installed?  Are you willing to 
prepare a patch?
