Would it make sense to have xboard always set that ivar, but ignore
the notifications if auto-refresh seek graph is turned off?

Apparently there is no solution to this problem:

The ivar that needs to be set on FICS to control the sending of 
seek-removal is locked at the start of the session. It can only be 
changed by logging off and on again.

Hi,

I just noticed that the seekgraph dots don’t automatically remove dots anymore 
when the seek ends,  this is in FICS.  

From what I have seen from an ICC guest account, it still works.

Sorry,  Never-mind.  It started working again.  I think you have to restart 
xboard after selecting it in the options before it will work fully

I see seek dots disappear from the graph when I logon to FICS. Are you 
sure Auto-refresh Seek Graph is ticked? It could also be a FICS problem; 
you need some support available only through ivars to be informed of 
seek-ad expiration. But I think XBoard should set the required ivar 
automatically when the auto-refresh option is on.


You remark led me to a WinBoard bug, however! 8-)

Turns out when you display the board with a border around it (unlike 
XBoard, WinBoard can do that), the seek graph is not aware of the 
border, and is drawn starting in the upper left corner, with the size of 
the board, rather than the size of the board+border. I guess I should 
scale it up to cover board+border, rather than shift it to just cover 
the board. No reason I can see to keep displaying a border around the 
seek graph.

It seems that this problem should both exist in XBoard and WinBoard.
It definitely is sub-standard behavior that this would need a restart. 
It is not very

easy to fix, however, as what you have to send to the ICS to get the removal
notification is different on FICS and ICS. And I guess a good fix should 
really also

switch the feature off again when the user unticks it interactively.
