I think this relates somehow to the fact that I have a SSD installed in the
Ultrabay slot instead of the CD/DVD drive.
When I eject the disk it continues. Once the login prompt appears it hangs
again until I put the drive adaptor back in

This is due to the gfx chip corrupting memory where the callout callwheel is
located. I have debugged it but not found a fix yet. The fix will involve
setting DMA properties correctly.

I don't have access to that VM until Monday, but I spun up a 3.6.2 VM on OS X
in Virtual Box, brought it to master latest, and tried to dhclient vtnet0 and
