This renders web sockets totally unusable in a production environment.
Reloading the service leads to a crash after some time (see
https://bz.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=65518).
Can we raise the piority of this request? It's really a "blocker" issue as you
cannot use a normal prod environment (crash on logrotate, etc.).

I have version 2.4.37 (Redhat default) used as a reverse proxy and I can
systematically reproduce the problem with the web sockets, although the effects
are slightly different (but I have additional info).

After a fresh start, I can perform a few reload without any critical problems.
After several reloads (depending on the sizing), a new reload leads to a httpd
crash.

In /var/log/messages:
systemd[1]: httpd.service: Reload operation timed out. Killing reload process.
systemd[1]: httpd.service: Killing process 28934 (httpd) with signal SIGKILL.
systemd[1]: httpd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

In httpd error log:
[slotmem_shm:error] [pid 8523:tid 140032774932800] (28)No space left on device:

The "No space left on device" message means it cannot create the file, it's not
a disk space problem; I guess it tries to use a name that is used by a process
that should have been closed.

I have Apache 2.4.55 compiled from source with many modules but
mod_heartmonitor wasn't one of them.  Still on start-up I get the message:

 I tried compiling in mod_heartmonitor but still get the same error.

 A google search said mod_slotmem_shm needed to be loaded before
heartmonitor, ok, I added this but since it's compiled static there is no
loading order.  But that didn't fix the error either.

 I do not see any obvious issues with how the server is running but don't
like spurious error messages as they point to some underlying issue that may
get me in the future or be exploitable by hackers.

work the same.

And mod_proxy_http will internally do the same as:
  RewriteCond %{HTTP:Upgrade} websocket [NC]
  RewriteCond %{HTTP:Connection} upgrade [NC]
without the need of mod_rewrite. If no websocket is negotiated by the client,
the request will be forwarded by using/enforcing HTTP as usual.

mod_proxy, which mod_proxy_http 2.4.47+ treats as/like "upgrade=websocket" (for

This documentation is about mod_proxy_wstunnel, and using mod_proxy_wstunnel
requires the mod_rewrite workaround still.
With 2.4.47 and newer it's possible to proxy the websocket protocol (ws and
wss) by using/loading mod_proxy_http only and adding upgrade=websocket to the
ProxyPass line.
Admittedly this is not well documented, that's why I'm trying to make this more
clear here. I'll try to update the general mod_proxy documentation about this
(https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_proxy.html) since it talks about the
ProxyPrass upgrade= parameter as something related to mod_proxy_wstunnel only.
Help on documentation and other always welcome though..

ProxyWebsocketFallbackToProxyHttp *off* would restore the old behaviour, the
default is "on" (websocket upgrade is fully handled by mod_proxy_http only).

ErrorLogFormat to accept "%{z}t" and "%{}t"

ErrorLogFormat is about every log in any httpd context (loading, request,
connection...), while LogFormat is always handled in the context of (the end
of) a request where all informations regarding the request are known/populated.
That and for historical reasons too (probably) they don't share much
code/formats.
For plain "%t" we can't change the output now, this would break for someone
somewhere.

This patch adds strftime() format by looking up for a '%' in the format, to
avoid (or minimize the chance of) breaking existing configurations like
"%{abcdu}t" where everything but 'u' or 'c' was ignored.
It also adds the special "%{z}t" format (or still combined with the existing
'c' and 'u' ones like in "%{uz}t" or "%{cuz}t").
The default time format gets treated as a fast-path too (no ErrorLogFormat
being handled as "%{u}t" internally).

ubuntu curl --compressed (which doesn't use brotli compression, just gzip) DOES
get the correct page, which is strange

a "test your url around the world" website shows line-noise each time

I'm wandering if its mod-includes + mod-rewrite + mod-brotli all together
that's getting it wrong - it is some difference between curl fetching a page,
and chrome fetching it.

Have 2 virtual servers with flat html pages that use SSI with multi-level
virtual="file.html"
includes
(e.g. page.html includes "top-of-page.html" which includes "brand_menu.html")

To differential between the 2 virtual servers, I use a .htaccess redirect for
server #2

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule"ssi/top/brand_menu.html" "/ssi_maps/brand_menu.html"


This causes the output to be line noise.

Pages that don't use the SSI redirect are fine.
Commenting out the "RewriteRule" is fine (just outputs the first server's
"brand_menu.html")

This is the line that's causing the problem



If mod_redirect gets involved in that line, the output is a page of line noise

Work around







Bit scary at first. Upgrading Apache2 has never caused a problem before.

In my opinion changing the default error message makes a lot of sense, as
especially in hosting environments it's hard to make clients believe that the
error message has nothing to do about server settings, but simply loops in
their .htaccess file.

I know this is an old issue, with a well known workaround.
But I'm still wondering if anyone is looking into fixing this on a mod_proxy
level.

Having applications with HTTP and WebSockets is pretty much the standard these
days, and none of them can benefit from mod_proxy's full featureset, thanks to
this design constraint, and this workaround.

When SSLSessionCacheTimeout is set to a value less than or equal to 3600, and
SSLVerifyClient is set to true, the log shows that the interval between
mod_ssl's verifying the client certificate is the value of
SSLSessionCacheTimeout.  When it is set to 5400 or lager, mod_ssl still
verifies the client certificate every 3600 seconds.  

In addition, SSLSessionCacheTimeout defined in virtual host doesn't overwrite
the value defined in ssl.conf.

Patch to remove the <9 limitation for N and M

Hi,

attached a patch that should remove the limitation of N or M <= 9.

Basically, the improvements are:
  - parse the format string only once at start-up and stores each part in a
link chain
  - N and M can be up to an 'int'
  - handle the invariant parts of the "interpolated-directory" one string at a
time, instead of one char at a time

So, I hope that it should also save a few cycles at runtime and easy any other
format extension.

This passes the test-framework modified with:
   VirtualDocumentRoot htdocs/modules/vhost_alias/%2/%1.15/%-2/%2+
   


Feedback on the WIP welcomed.


I'll continue on it next week in order to:
   - use varbuf to avoid the final copy of the string and remove the
HUGE_STRING_LEN (8192) limitation

I thought that this fact was documented (it's not) and I know that I've
mentioned it many times as a limitation, over the years, in presentations given
about this module.

Yes, N and M are limited to the range -9 to 9.

Which isn't to say that your bug report is false. Just that this is
known/expected behavior. (That said, this could certainly be a worthwhile
improvement to the module.)

Hello,

We have detected an issue with selecting substring for VirtualDocumentRoot
using "%N.M" method. We are using negative values for removing the part of the
domain.

Problem: when we need to use number with multiple digits the solution is not
working. Created path does not contains the expected path (only some
letters/chars).

* Sample domain: data-samplesubdomain.sub.example.com
* VirtualDocumentRoot "/opt/staging/%1.-16+"

When used shortened domain which requires only single digit numbers for the
rule, then everything works fine:
* Sample domain: data-sample.sub.example.com
* VirtualDocumentRoot "/opt/staging/%1.-8+"
* Result: /opt/staging/data

Hi,
i would also like this to be resolved. I Reproduced this issue on
Fedora-Rawhide.
My proposal is to remove the first set of BusyWorkers IdleWorkers when ?auto
query is supplied and let only the second set be printed out with correct
values which count with gracefully finishing threads but renaming is also ok.

You seem to imply the path to the httpd binary is "sensitive information" for
an administrator privileged to read error_log, which seems quite ludicrous.

If you need to create a "sanitized" error_log you should do that with a
filtering piped logger.

Hi,

We found that during the startup/shutdown of the httpd server, 'notice' levels
logs are generated in error.log even though the log level of the module is
above it. As part of this, the complete path of the process is disclosed in the
log file and causes disclosure of sensitive information.

Ex - [Wed Jan 18 03:30:09.575677 2023] [core:notice] [pid 1109] AH00094:
Command line: '/usr/sbin/httpd -D FOREGROUND'

Upon further investigation we found that these logs are printed from below
file.
Please find below the code snippet from /httpd-2.4.51/server/log.c file.

Not the ideal solution but it seems to work. 
(Still testing but, at least, Apache is now starting)

Hi All,

During httpd performance evaluation in Alibaba Cloud instance, I found httpd
performance improved significantly after using “taskset” to set CPU affinity
for httpd processes/threads, because it decreased the amount of CPU migrations.
Performance improved 60% in arm instance g8y.2xlarge(8 vcpus, 32GiB memory,
40GB ESSD), also improved 20% in x86 instance g7.2xlarge(8 vcpus, 32GiB memory,
40GB ESSD). Test case: run httpd with event mode on g8y.2xlarge or g7.2xlarge,
run traffic generator/benchmark 'wrk' on g8y.4xlarge(16 vcpus, 32GiB memory,
40GB ESSD), wrk command is 'wrk -t 32 -c 1000 -d 30 --latency http://$ServerIP'

mpm event parameters:

StartServers  8
ServerLimit 100
ThreadLimit2000
MinSpareThreads  75
MaxSpareThreads2000
ThreadsPerChild 125
MaxRequestWorkers  2000


But httpd didn't have related parameters to support CPU affinity, so I used
"taskset" to optimize. After source code analysis, I made a prototype for the
affinity solution(add set_affinity function when worker/lister thread created).
We can observed the same improvement by this solution. However, this prototype
only applied on above special “event mpm” configuration. I think also need to
modify current mechanism of dynamically adapts to the perceived load and add
new parameters for the affinity setting. 

So is it possible to involve httpd developer to evaluate this request and add
cpu affinity function in future version?

With the following configuration, Apache 2.4.54 (self built with OpenSSL 1.1.1s
does not start :

and gives the error : "LDAPConnectionPoolTTL has wrong format"

FWIW I agree it's a bug this isn't caught by "httpd -t", but it would
definitely not be acceptable to silently "disable" some vhosts because the
certs were badly configured.

Looks like it might require some significant surgery to fix, and there are
various different ways certs can be configured, so doesn't look like a trivial
patch at all.

This is still a bug as of 2022.  I was panicking because I manage several
websites, all of which are under one certificate and were down for 45 minutes
while I troubleshooted.  It would be really helpful if regular HTTP could start
without HTTPS in the event of a mismatch.

The cryptic startup error messages eventually led me to the ssl_error_log,
which reported:

AH02565: Certificate and private key fe80::3eec:efff:fefb:56d6:443:0 from
/mnt/raid5/etc/ssl/andrewwatters_com.crt and
/mnt/raid5/etc/ssl/andrewwatters_com.key do not match

This apparently happens when the Certificate Signing Request uses the wrong
key.  To correct the CSR and use it with your existing key, do this:

openssl req -new -key yourkey.key -out req.csr

You'll have to fill out the required CSR fields, and you'll get a corrected CSR
to use with your SSL provider.  Hopefully they can promptly reissue the
certificate or else you have a few days left on your prior certificate.

AH00124 tells you that you have too many internal redirects (usually a loop in
a RewriteRule). Unless you use 'LogLevel debug', you have no idea about the
problem and it may be very difficult to reproduce in a test environment.
On a busy server, it's also difficult to correlate it with tha access log.
It would be very handy to add the URL in the error message.

Apache HTTPD 2.4.54 properly validates if user is valid AND validates if user
is member of ldap1. Both a) and b) rules work as expected.

Problem: mod_authnz_ldap sets AUHTHORIZE_ variables (AUTHORIZE_DISPLAYNAME,
AUTHORIZE_MAIL) only for b),
i.e. mod_authnz_ldap does not set AUHTHORIZE_ variables for the a) case.

Hi

I found bug in http2 proxy. Content-Type header is not set correctly if served
file name match with mime.types

With simple http proxy it's handle via `mod_proxy_http.c:1302-1304`


I can reproduce this bug with a front httpd proxying to an other httpd that
serving php files.

Here my test case
