[BVARC] FW: FW: [tdxs-list] Performance of KK5W Mega Field Days over five years

2019-05-06 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
Regarding the use of FT4 during FD, here is the comment from Glenn Anderson,
WB5TUF, who is responsible for setting up the RTTY and FT8 digital modes.

As far as I know, ft4 will not be released for use in the June vhf or field
day contests. The rc5 software has a kill switch that executes in early June.

I am planning to use ft8 for this year's event.

Robie or Glenn,

I am not an expert on FT8 or FT4. Can you please comment on Wes’s comments
regarding FT4? I was under the impression that Fox and Hounds mode was not
allowed for FD.

At the risk of hijacking your post, Nizar, I’m wondering about a few things.
First, the upcoming FT4 “practice” session this Friday at UTC is supposed
to break in the mode for contesting. Actually, if you tune 14080 there are
already a ton of signals there and I’ve been working lots of stations using
that mode. So, I think the practice session has already started. Second, does
anyone know what the exchange will be during that time? As it stands now, most
everyone is just sending signal reports as per FT8. Interestingly enough, if
someone replies to your CQ with an RTTY contest exchange i.e 589 TX, the
software asks you if you want to jump into the RTTY contest mode similar to FT8
Fox and Hounds. When you do, it’s possible to work multiple stations as if you
were the fox. Third, since the final version of FT4 will be announced in June,
I’m thinking this could be the preferred digital mode for FD. That is assuming
some type of FD exchange is developed similar to FT8. Hopefully things will
smooth out before the end of next month.

Wes, N5WW

P.S. This is just my humble opinion but from what I have seen with FT4, I
think it might upstage FT8. Nowadays we all want instant gratification and six
seconds is a lot shorter than the interminable twelve you have to hold your
breath for with FT8.

I thought you may be interested in how the KK5W Mega Field Day has performed
during the last five years. These numbers were taken from the 3830Scores web
site.

While FD has always been about community service and promotion of ham radio,
hams are encouraged to teach about ham radio, antennas and operation of radios.
ARRL specifically encourages ham radio operators to make as many QSO’s as
possible during the 24 hours of operation, almost like a fun contest. The table
below shows the QSO’s and Points for KK5W during the last five years. KK5W has
done well in the past. Let’s see if we can improve on our score this year while
having fun doing it.

show that off. SO MANY THINGS IN THE DESCRIPTION CHECK IT ...

Re: [BVARC] Antenna up, possible purchase

2019-05-06 Thread KE8G via BVARC
Hi Martin,
I am not familiar with that one, but can highly recommend their DX-88
antenna. I’ve had one for several years now and it works well. I know it
goes to 80 meters, and I think down to 6. I am not 100% sure on he 6
meters, as I am not interested in that band.

I added about a mile of wire for radials on the DX-88 and it performs
well. I don’t use it for the typical HF bands, as I have a yagi for that,
but do use it on 30-80 meters.

Hope to see you at Field Day.
