Re: [Callers] A Dance without Partner Swing

2018-05-15 Thread billinhi--- via Callers

I agree with John Sweeney, but it all depends.
For a large group of beginners, rather than spending time
explaining the advantage of having an experienced partner or trying to
split beginners up,

the simple solution is have a dance where they don't swing together.

like:
Easier Than Pie by Billy Boyer
Essex Reel by Tony Parkes
First Star by Ted Steele
Open Rehearsal by Jacob Bloom
Paul's Fishing Reel by Jim Gregory
Saturday Night Reel by Herbie Gaudreau
Sunrise Jig by Shelly Jenkins

I usually limit it to one dance, but it depends.
Then there is the 'almost' situation where only the 1s or 2s swing.
It has the same risk of 'disappointing' the dedicated swingers.

like:
Alternating Corners by Jim Kitch
Boiling Mud by Greg Byrne
Three's Company by Paul Balliet
and quite a few others.

Then there is the case where there is so much going on in the dance,
that there just isn't

anywhere to fit in a partner swing.

like:
The Thirty-Fourth of October by Bob Archer
Divided Star by Don Armstrong
and other dances already mentioned.

But I grant you, I can't think of a reason I would call one of these,
when there are so many other better dances...
But then there is the argument that as a change of pace,
with an interesting dance, most people won't really notice.
But it's got to be a dynamite dance, or after dances with long partner
swings.

As Grocho Marx once quipped,  "...but I take [my cigar] out of my mouth
every once in a while."

First, do you call any such modern dances without a partner swing?
Why or why not?

Second, if you do, do you announce it before the preceding dance so as
to inform those pairs of dancer that love to swing together?

The Tease by Tom Hinds is one such creative dance that begs to be called.

Re: [Callers] Star 1/2 -> Star 1/2?

2018-04-22 Thread billinhi--- via Callers

No disrespect, but
This reminds me of a few decades back when a particular programming
language introduced some instructions with "WICKED", (I mean WICKED!)
side effects.

What ensued were many discussions about how to handle these instructions.
Whereupon one of my colleagues came up with what proved to be the wisest
advice of all...

Do Not Use.

(Of course, some even wiser folk will immediately realize that these are
PERFECT gems to save for special events

Like April 1.)
(I recall Jim Popson had a library of such gems with missing beats,
added beats and even extra phrases)

http://keftimes.org/wp-content/uploads/Godecki-Cacak-thread-EEFC-listserv-12.2014.pdf
(I realize this was a different culture, but you'd be surprised how they
overlap.)

trickier to teach than I expected. The difficulty is in the
orientation (particularly on the ends), not the timing. I set the
dance to a half-length version of Larry Unger's /Two Rivers /which is
in waltz time, so the timing could be different in contra. I think
the hands-across style star used in most English dances facilitates
that kind of transition. I think it creates the nice flow pattern you
envision, looking forward to trying it. Nice idea, Luke!

Re: [Callers] New (?) simple dance without a neighbor swing

2018-04-20 Thread billinhi--- via Callers

With such a simple dance, one would think so.
Along the way I developed a shorthand,
which I used to both not put dances too similar into the same program,
and build a program with dances which had a definite progression of moves.
So I took your dance and quickly found that:
There are at least 4 dances which have the same A part.
"Daddy's Little Girl" by Chart Guthrie
"Black Mountain Rag" by Henry Garfath
"Monday" by Jim Hemphill
"Salmonella Evening" by Steve Zakon-Anderson

But only "Daddy's Little Girl" has a similar B part.
A1
Neighbor Allemande Right 1 1/2
Gents Allemande Left 1 1/2
A2
Partner Balance and Swing
B1
Ladies chain
Right & Left Thru
B2
Circle Left
Left hand star 1x
Anr6;Aml6;Spb;-;Cw;T;Ol;*l

Yours has a nice Cw;*l combination.
Anr6;Aml6;Spb;-;Lfk;M;Cw;*l

The problem is that the descriptions of many of the older dances aren't
available on-line.

And I don't happen to have access to them.

"Heritage Reel" by Tony Parkes is a permutation of your dance,
but it starts off with Neighbor Balance and Swing,
doesn't have a Left hand star or Neighbor Allemande Right.

Re: [Callers] Another occupational hazard for callers

2018-03-12 Thread billinhi--- via Callers
You might also consider how to make a test as to whether there is UV in
your environment.
I did a little research and turns out there is a little trick you can
perform.

Highlighter markers rely on UV to make them glow.
So if you use one to write on a dark or preferably black piece of cardboard,
under non-UV you can't see anything, but under UV the lettering glows.
It would be nice to know how good a test this is under real conditions.
Maybe you want to put one in your deck of cards.

Anne Lutun via Callers wrote:

When was the last time you got a tan at an *indoor* contradance?

No, this is not a joke. I got sunburned while calling this past
Saturday (March 3rd, in Pennsylvania).

How is this possible? Probably a damaged metal halide bulb in the
community center gym where the dance was held. Apparently this is a
problem that occurs sporadically in gyms all over the country, as I
found out after a google search:

https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2004/05/19/damaged-metal-halide-lamps-can-cause-indoor-sunburns-56964/

https://www.fda.gov/Radiation-EmittingProducts/RadiationSafety/AlertsandNotices/ucm116540.htm

I'm very fair-skinned and burn easily, but I'm not the only one who
was affected — the musicians got sunburns as well, and two of them
have (mild) eye irritation symptoms. It's only when we compared notes
yesterday that we realized what had happened.

We will all be ok, and thankfully there haven't been any reports of
dancers being affected — it was a large and lively crowd, and we kept
them moving! Other than the burns, it was an absolutely wonderful dance.

The problem had not occurred before at this monthly event because the
bank of lights that we now think the culprit bulb is a part of is not
usually on. It was needed that night because some of the other lights
had burned out.

I would like to commend the dance organizers for taking the problem
very seriously. Once informed, they immediately contacted the
community center management, who in turn promised to address the issue
right away.

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but next time you call in a gym, you may
want to wear sunscreen!
