Hey all,
Michael Karcher suggested this was a good endpoint for dance questions. I
used this simple jumble at a dance recently. I never looked into whether it
was an existing sequence, but I would assume so... -

You might have seen it already, but I'm a fan of Sherry Nevin's "Monkey in
the Middle." She technically calls it a square, but I think of it as a 9
person circle mixer.

Hey all,
A question I've been mulling over for several months now is where the line
blurs from "a variation of" to "a dance based on" to "a dance of my own"
when writing contras.
*For example:*
Last Hey (First Hey var.) - Paul Balliet and *maybe* Isaac Banner in a way?

Hi Luke,
In my case I'm usually looking for a pair or sometimes a trio of factors -
a specific semi-distinctive move (hey, petronella, etc), a
mood/feel/energy/emotion, and sometimes a difficulty. I'm not normally on a
blind search unless I know what hole I need to fill but don't have a dance

Hey Andy,
I think I still stand by my preference for the hey to go by the other
shoulder with the ladies dancing straight forward, rather than weaving,
especially having danced both roles for your dance the two nights you
called it up in Seattle.
Here's the dance I mentioned, as well, with my tak
Hi Chris,
I've gone ahead and added a short-link on contra.dance -

Hopefully this can make it a little easier to share around.
Thanks for the work you two put into bringing this together!

Hey everyone,
Improbably, I've found that I've reached the bottom of my barrel of jokes
to tell while calling!
Part of it might be that I go through more than just 1 or 2 on some
nights
Regardless, I've found that I need to restock my box of dance-safe humor a
bit if I'm going to keep up my i
Hey all,
I've felt like most box circulate dances use the circulate as a buildup
into a swing with *someone*. Looking at
http://www.contra.dance/thecallersbox, there are only 12 results for dances
with a circulate that isn't followed by a swing and 9 of those results
don't include their choreograp
Isn't #1 just a California Twirl (unless we want to debate whether it can
only be a Cali Twirl if we're using those hands AND they're our outside
hands)?
For #2 I'd say there isn't much of a difference aside from suggesting a
path on the floor to the dancers. LD circle left might feel more crowded
Oh, good point. I know Michael Karcher once told me the opposite of a
California Twirl was a Jersey Twirl, but I've heard other names used.

Hey John,
If the N word was also a move that somehow wasn't connected to the slur,
you wouldn't dare argue that it's different or that you should get to call
it, so drop the argument please. Just because you don't think I should be
offended about the word and how it reflects on my heritage doesn't
