*A Tribute to a Khmer Patriot, Lauk Dikhayuko Sen*
* *
December 12, 2008

While in Cambodia last December I received a sad and shocking news that my
beloved and respected Lauk Pou Yuko had passed away. I felt numbed and
depressed for a full day. The news hit me so personally because a few hours
before I boarded the plane for Cambodia on December 16, 2007 I had talked
to Lauk Pou Yuko on the phone about the condition of his health. He told me
that he felt fine except that his feet were giving him some troubles. He
wished me a good and safe trip.

The loss of Lauk Pou Yuko had devastated me because I consider him not only
my elder that I often seek advices but also a true good and reliable
friend. I felt like a part of me is missing. I used to communicate with him
almost daily on the internet and talk to him once a week on the phone. We
share the same common interests. Even though I am much younger than him,
somehow we love the same French songs from the 1940 to 1960 eras. On the
phone we sometimes conversed in French and then switching back to Khmer.

Lauk Pou Yuko was a true Khmer patriot with an honesty that is so rare to
find nowadays. He was a person that I seek advices on many things. He was
an admirable man who stayed true to his belief of democracy. He never
wavered in his love for Cambodia and the institution of the monarchy. He
believed in the decency of Khmer people.

Lauk Pou Yuko is what the French called "l'homme du monde" and "un bon
vivant". He was a man who was very knowledgeable in history, in geography,
in diplomacy, in both western and Khmer protocols, and in Khmer culture and
tradition. It is such a loss for our Khmer community. A couple of months
ago Lauk Pou Yuko had discussed with my brothers and me about writing a
memoir when he would feel better. We encouraged him to do so because we
would all learn from his vast experiences as a diplomat, a statesman, and a
wise man that had seen everything.

I am very privileged and honored to have known Lauk Dhikayuko Sen
personally. I have learned so much from him. I will never forget the trip
that he and I took together in the summer of 2000 to the Grand Canyon. He
and I sang "La Vie en Rose" in unison. He recited a passage from "Le Cid"
and French poetry from "La Fable de La Fontaine". He is a fun person to be
around. The party will never be bored with him attending. He can easily
switch the conversation from politics to history to diplomacy to music or
to any subjects you want to talk about. What I am most impressed about
Lauk Dhikayuko Sen was his memory. He retained facts and events that had
occurred way back in the past.

I am still mourning the loss of my beloved elder Lauk Dhikayuko Sen because
I feel a piece of my life is now missing. Now I don't have anybody that is
as knowledgeable as him to talk or write to.

Lauk Pou Yuko was a true Buddhist who believed in "Bonn" and "Baab". All
his life he has done only good deeds and I am sure he will reach the
highest stage that will enable him to reach nirvana soon.

Farewell my Beloved and Respected Elder Lauk Dhikayuko Sen.

May You Rest in Peace.

With Love and Affection,

Kenneth Thay So
