I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (unity)
The problem has been resolved by adding the proposed directive to the
desktop launcher file.
Open the menu shortcut file:
nano /usr/share/applications/AdobeReader.desktop
and Replace the line/s:
#Exec=/opt/Adobe/Reader9/bin/acroread
Exec=env
