Sorry I exactly don't remember what all I tried to do it. I remember I
changed the login-webflow.xml
I compared both the login webflow and removed few transition in 5.3.X to
make it work I guess.

I experienced the exact same issue with my dev environment running on CAS
5.3.5. Unfortunately, I'm far less capable of digging deeper into it than
you. I'd recommend to open an issue on Github.
