I decided to walk in search of Jay's reported Tufted Duck because, shamefully, I ended up driving to see the first-ever basin Tufted Duck last year. (First obliviousness and then drenched optics prevented my seeing that bird on a bike trip.) Yet I didn't want to walk on the roads or railroad (I got
TUFTED DUCK male dozing in SW corner Cayuga Lake near ice.

Here is a link to a checklist that Jessie and I entered into eBird, which
includes photos of the Tufted Duck and the Canvasback x Redhead. The latter
resembles a Common Pochard but has more extensive black on the bill and
slightly different bill and head shape.

The bird was out with the distant scaup flock. All the birds shifted north
around 1230 and we have not been able to find it since. Still lots of
Aythya at East Shore, so it may appear again or it may be in a sub flock up
to the north. Chris Wood also had a Redhead x Canvasback in the group.
On Feb
Belltown Dairy (North end of Davis Road at the county line) is spreading fresh
manure this morning. Great numbers of SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS feeding in
the field. Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS mixed in (continuing).
Not nearly as exciting as a Tufted Duck, but great views of the flock from the

For three days in a row there has been a dark Rough-legged Hawk hanging out in
the 1200 block of Coddington Rd near Brooktondale. This is the spot with the
