Hi all, This afternoon, Hope Batcheller and I took a quick trip up to Montezuma, with the primary goal to track down Kevin's Purple Gallinule, but also just to see what was around. We started at the MNWR Visitor Center pond, where there were hundreds of Canada Geese, DUNLIN, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and scattered Black-bellied Plovers (at least 15). Continuing to the Wildlife Drive, we searched the edge of the cattails and smartweed in vain. When we got to the spot where the gallinule was yesterday, there were 4 or 5 coots, and one juvenile COMMON MOORHEN. Farther down, there were an additional 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS in the new shorebird habitat just before the Oxbow Trail.
We then checked Towpath Road, were there were many Canada and Snow Geese. We eventually picked out one adult ROSS' GOOSE that was among the Snow Geese. All of the geese eventually flew off shortly before the sun set.
