Not a great rarity, but it was nice to see a female Purple Finch dining at our
tray feeder this morning. The usual suspects were there as well.

I'm betting a House Finch--sounds like a more typical nest spot for them.
But what a joy--would love to have them on my porch!!!

Lots of birds around today and migrants are beginning to appear. A female
PURPLE FINCH had breakfast at our hopper feeder in the company of a
multitude of house finches. Keep looking. There's probably something at
your feeders that you don't see very often.

Hi everyone,
I've been over at the Cornell Plantations Arboretum for the past couple of
mornings, photographing Red-winged Blackbirds. but like all of us, I am hungry
for some new migrants to show up, especially orioles! So after I packed my gear
up. I took a walk around the arboretum and sudde
The Purple Finches and Chipping Sparrows have made it to Auburn. I got the
Sparrow a couple of days ago, and just got a beautiful male Purple Finch. It
was interesting to compare Sparrows. I had a Tree and Chipping Sparrow feeding
side by side.

I suspected that once I posted that I hadn't had any male purple finch
since last Thursday, they would reappear. Right on cue, a male showed
up a few minutes ago.

This morning we were visited by a lone male Purple Finch at our feeders. No
females.
In early spring, with freezing nights and warm days, we get some large
maple-sap icicles on one red maple. From our kitchen we get to see the amusing
spectacle of chickadees & titmouse(s) fluttering, hovering a

We had a male PURPLE FINCH come to our feeders on March 25. It didn't
stick around, and we haven't seen this species since. Thinking that
others had already seen them, we didn't bother reporting this sighting.

Taking a quick break and looking at the Lab feeder garden, I saw a female
PURPLE FINCH among the House Finches and Common Redpolls, my first for the year.
Also present was the continuing FIELD SPARROW, pointed out to me by Caroline
