On our beginner bird walk this morning Lisa and I and three visitors saw
a large flock of blackbirds fly into a couple treetops. We were almost
to the Sherwood platform. They just did not seem to fit "Starlings" .
Longer tails and they sounded different. Getting the scope on them we
saw
A single Rusty Blackbird among red-wings, grackles and starlings yesterday;
3/09. I haven't noted before the distinctive "prancing" steps of Rusty as this
bird showed.
Today, a foxy Fox Sparrow dug a fox hole in a slight layer of snow.

Dave Nutter and I (and a small group of bird-walk participants) saw the Rusty
Blackbird a few times this morning near the Lab of O feeder garden between 9:00
and 11:00. We all had fabulous looks at the bird's rusty-edged feathers and
white eyes through Dave's scope.

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was at the front feeders at the Lab of Ornithology a few
minutes ago. It is now perched in a tree over the feeders, giving call
notes and occasionally song fragments. A PINE SISKIN and some BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS have also been seen here this morning.

I walked the Seneca Trail at Montezuma this morning. Along with the usual
suspects, I saw a Rusty blackbird, a close look. And my first Dark-eyed
junco of the year.

25 Rusty Blackbird just east of Slaterville Springs (50 m) in wet woods north
of Rt 79, between Rt. 79 and Slaterville-Harford Rd.
Birds have been here up to Sunday evening for 3 days. Having said that, they
are sure to fly away over night.
A single Rusty Blackbird was just camped out at my feeders for an hour. That's
a new yard bird for me.

Here's an interesting article about the Rusty Blackbird that appears in
Northern Woodlands magazine (a very nice publication with all kinds of natural
history tidbits, although with a definite focus on forestry, for those who
aren't familiar with it)
There is a RUSTY BLACKBIRD visible in the treetops at the north end of the
Lab right now.

There was a single singing RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Sapsucker Woods this morning (18
March 2010) as I came into work. For the person who asked on the listserve
some time recently about good places to see this species, I'd say that
Sapsucker Woods is probably one of the better places in the area.

I got a great look at a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at aprx. 3pm today. It was near the
foot bridge on Wilson Trail North. I've also seen a BROWN CREEPER in the same
area twice in the past 5 days.

I had a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD, male, still in breeding plumage,
foraging on the ground in a stand of maple trees on West Covert Road
this morning. Other birds of note: 3 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS, 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 3 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, as well
and both DOWNY
A bright female RUSTY BLACKBIRD was just visible in the 10 square feet that
is the view from my cubicle at the Lab, on the north side of the
building. A few rusties have been seen on the trails over the last week or
two.
