Around midday today while XC skiing at Bear Swamp, which had a good 6+ inches
of snow cover, I flushed from a small snow-free patch of wet grassy muck a
snipe or woodcock, which flew off not too far and interestingly looked to have
landed on a tree branch at about eye level. Alas without binocul
Standing on the Sherwood platform @ 2:00pm, the bird flew directly over my
head, heading southwest and into the woods -- didn't see it take off or
land. Couldn't get any distinctive plumage marks. Flew straight and
relatively quickly at a height of about 20 ft off the ground. Based on that

Early this evening, Susie & I saw a WILSON'S SNIPE fly in front of our car on
Boiceville Rd., Town of Caroline. It apparently was looking for a former
wetland there which has recently been covered over by a cancerous housing
development. Sad.

My granddaughter and I flushed the snipe at 5:25 pm exactly where it had been
reported yesterday. In the small open area of the backwater from Fall Creek
just west of the main footbridge. If you park at SP and cross the two bridges,
turn slightly to your right and walk thru the hedge break. Scan
