I take it that the Merlin app does not work on an iPad. Am I right?
I downloaded it to ID a bird I just got a glimpse of. I had a Goldfinch sized
bird that I only saw from the back. It was distinctive because it's outer tail
feathers were yellow like a Junco's are white. Any idea as to

On consecutive 15 min. visits to the parking lot at Rite Aid in Dryden:
two Merlin flying into spruce trees just to the east of Rite Aid at ~
4:00 PM Sunday, and on Monday ~7:`15 one flying from trees to the south.

Last evening we watched a family of Merlins in the northeast area of Ithaca.
We first saw them preening in the trees on Hanshaw near Orchard after the
thunder storm had passed. They flew to the trees near St. Catherine's Church
where they swooped down on a family of foraging crows, and chased

I did the same thing too! And found Merlin
I've been sitting the last hour here in the cemetary, watching a (presumably)
female merlin hanging out on the highest naked snag atop a pine, calling
regularly and making frequent flycatcher-style forays. Then, a moment ago, a
slightly different call signaled the arrival of a (presumably) male
I'm thrilled the Merlins are back in the cemetery. After Stuart's post I
stopped by and had terrific views of the female on the bare treetop. As with
Suan, the male and female would call and respond several times then he would
swoop in, copulating, then off again. They did this two times with a

The idea that Merlins take only House Sparrows and Starlings is somewhere
between
pure hogwash and wishful thinking. More on a par with My outdoor cat doesn't
harm
birds than reality. Perhaps the relationship to these two species comes from
the
fact that they are the only two bird species
Since it has been mentioned that Merlins taking mostly House Sparrows (no one
has ever mentioned starlings that I know of) is hogwash, I thought it might be
useful to look at the available data. I copy here Appendix 1 from the BNA
Merlin account, which lists the results of 6 published studies
to the availability of
House Sparrows.

A merlin has been circling high in the sky for last few minutes. Initially, I
thought it was sharpie, but views from binoculars showed it to be a falcon.
May be it is the same one that Dave reported from Stewart Park today morning.
There were also some smaller birds around it, probably they

On the corner of Pleasant Grove and Handshaw Roads, while in traffic around
7:25 a.m., a Merlin swerved in front of a car ahead of me, and continued to
the Cayuga Hgts Community Ctr shopping area. It was flying low and
powerful. It certainly got my attention! It was a great way to start the
day.
At 8:00 this morning a Merlin was perched atop the big snag on the pond at
Sapsucker Woods. After a minute, it dropped down over the back of the pond, and
I couldn't relocate it.
The trees near the visitors center entrance were covered with blackbirds, a mix
of Red-winged Blackbirds and Rusty
At 4:07.
