I was just outside, raking the lawn, and thinking of Laura's eagles. So I
came in to get my binos just in case. Back outside, I had just picked up
the rake, and looking up, saw a beautiful juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE!!! gliding
low, on a straight line, to the northeast, right over the house. Binos
Shawn Billerman, Chris Wiley, and I spent the day out birding yesterday
(20 March 2010), and saw most of the same birds that others have
reported (as we spent at least some time with many of the others who
have reported). As crazy as it is to say this on a day when we saw
Western Grebe,
While continuing my search for golden eagles from my front yard (Susie found
a BALD EAGLE to the south, and far off), an E. PHOEBE flew by my head,
joining up with another at the far side of the yard, and heading into the
soon-to-be sunset.

Ravens along the lake are scarce, but a pair has been nesting in Taughannock
gorge for several years. I've also seen them at Portland Point and just up
from there at Drake Road several times.

Hi all,
I've been enjoying photographing Common Mergansers in Stewart Park for the past
few days, and if anyone would like to see photos of some of the cool activities
they've been getting up to, there are some images here:

I saw two Tree Swallows today at Tshache Pool. Why do Tree Swallows come so
early when it is freezing out here? What evolutionary pressures force them to
arrive at the breeding ground early? I was wondering if it has to do something
with availability of nest cavities. Blue Birds seem to have
