Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
5/29: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was seen from the observation tower at the
visitor’s center.
5/31: 4 VIRGINIA RAILS were found at Railroad Road. 2 SANDHILL CRANES and
10 BLACK TERNS were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. Good numbers of DUNLIN,
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, LEAST SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh.
6/3: 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were found in the shorebird area at the Visitor;s
Center. As of 6/7 a.m. one of the birds was still being seen.
6/4: A SEDGE WREN was found at Railroad Road.
6/6: 2 CERULEAN WARBLERS were found at the Visitor’s Center.
Derby Hill
The Derby Hill Hawk Watch wound up the season on 5/31. 135 Hawks were
counted that day. For the season 29,765 Hawks were officially recorded. TURKEY
VULTURES just edged out BROAD-WINGED HAWKS as the most abundent species.
Oswego County
5/31: 5 BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were found in Brewerton just east of
the Rt.11 bridge. If accepted by NYSARC they would be the first of their kind
ever recorded in New York. They were seen briefly at Caughdenoy later that
afternoon and have not been reported since.
6/2: At Sandy Pond BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER,
SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER and BLACK TERN were all seen.
Madison County
6/4: A first year male ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen on Ditchbank Road north of
Chittenango.
Onondaga County
6/4: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues on Fenner Road west of
Baldwinsville. A pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES continues on Perry Road near Whiskey
Hollow.
6/5: An Onondaga Audubon field trip to the Camillus Forest Unique Area
found 42 species. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was the highlight of the trip.
6/7: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at Three Rivers WMA on Kellog Road
north of Baldwinsville.
