[cayugabirds-l] new sightings/hearings

2012-05-01 Thread Asher Hockett
Put up a new feeder along with the older ones at home in Danby and
immediately had a Chipping Sparrow on one side and Field Sparrow on the
other. Bluebirds are checking our the box where they were successfull last
year. The Brown Thrashers are back working my driveway and I heard Eastern
Towhees over a week ago. This morning a Junco was singing in the back yard,
and when I walked by the IPD station this morning I heard a Nashville
Warbler singing in the woods above 6 Mile Creek.

[cayugabirds-l] B Oriole, RB Grosbeaks

2012-05-01 Thread Donna Scott
This morning I spotted my FOS Baltimore Oriole (male) and 2 brilliantly rosey
male Rose Breasted Grosbeaks feeding in my oak trees and at my feeders! The 2
male Grosbeaks are flying around together.

Also, saw a Black and White Warbler, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, lots of Blue Jays,
Cardinals, pairs of Red Bellied Downy Woodpeckers, 2 Juncos, 4 Chipping
Sparrows, a brightly white and yellow decked White Throated Sparrow,
Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, A. Crows, C. Grackles, RW Blackbirds, and BH
Cowbirds.

Last night, returning home from the excellent seminar at CLO, in the heavy
rain, I rescued the largest Toad I have ever seen from the middle of Lansing

[cayugabirds-l] New birds

2012-05-01 Thread Carol Keeler
I just had my FOS Rose Breasted Grosbeak at my feeders. When I got my paper, I
finally heard a White Crowned Sparrow in my yard and later spotted him under
the feeders. I've had a White Throated Sparrow for a few days. Yesterday, I
heard a House Wren singing in the neighborhood.Since people are listing
Orioles, it's time for me to put out an Oriole feeder. Things are looking up,
bird wise. Just haven't seen a Purple Finch at the feeder yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park: Cliff Swallow, Forster's Tern

2012-05-01 Thread Dave Nutter
I was at East Shore Park by 8am, then Stewart Park from 8:20 to 10:50 Among the 30 BONAPARTE'S GULL's on the red lighthouse breakwater were at least 7 COMMON TERNS, while 2 FORSTER'S TERN flew over the Inlet and alit on 2 narrow orange-striped white buoys east of the red lighthouse. On the wire out to the white lighthouse among were briefly 2 CLIFF SWALLOWS among about 20 of the usuals. They flew upstream along the inlet shortly after I scoped them.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Thrush

2012-05-01 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
At noon on our hill I found a gorgeous male Baltimore Oriole singing in an
apple tree, and while thrilling to that I was stunned to hear right behind me
(in the spruce grove) the prolonged scolding of a Wood Thrush. (Confirmed this
with BirdTunes when I came in-- they call it pit volleys!)

And near the house a Warbling Vireo is combing the maple trees while humming to
himself.

WOW.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Terns still around

2012-05-01 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
After work I stopped by the Swan Pen to see if I could clean up on a
few of the great birds everyone has been seeing today. Four FORSTER'S TERNS,
one COMMON TERN were sitting on snags. Many BONAPARTE'S GULLS are still there
along with the continuing imm. ICELAND GULL which looked positively hulking on
the jetty. SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were everywhere with a SOLITARY SANDPIPER along
the river; thanks Ann.
WARBLING VIREOS and especially B.G. GNATCATCHERS were in abundance as
were YELLOW WARBLERS. One KILLDEER vocally assaulted the lawn. A flock of 18
D.C. CORMORANTS flew over. One Cormorant had a white head and neck, otherwise
the body, wings and breast were black.

Good birding !

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma and Vicinity, East Side of Cayuga Lake and Myer's May 1 2012

2012-05-01 Thread david nicosia
Had a meeting between Syracuse and Utica this morning and then had
to teach a weather class in Ithaca at 7 pm...so to kill time I spent
from 130 to 630 pm today birding from Montezuma to Myer's.
For just 5 hours of birding, I totaled 95 species!! I did no birding
in any forested areas so my forest birds are way down. I missed
easy woodpecker species, tufted titmouse etc. But like everyone else
has reported, today there was a huge influx of migrants to upstate NY!

Highlights: Montezuma Visitors Center:  WARBLING VIREO,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, many YELLOW WARBLERS, HOUSE
WREN,  GRAY CATBIRD all FOY for me, except HOUSE WREN.
Swarms of swallows. I had all swallow species including PURPLE MARTIN
except today I just could not get a CLIFF SWALLOW. In Broome County
last Saturday, I had all except PURPLE MARTIN. Vistor's center
was short on shorebirds...just GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS.

Larue's as I sent before had the best shorebird diversity.
eventually I ended up with 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 DUNLIN,
2 LEAST SANDPIPER, SPOTTED and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS,
KILLDEER and 1 WILSON'S SNIPE. There was also one AMERICAN
PIPIT and SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL calling sporadically from the Marsh
across the road.

New shorebird area empty, water too high. Benning Marsh all DUNLIN
50+. Flyover CASPIAN TERN and 1 AMERICAN PIPIT. Also saw
a huge flock of gulls, terns (I think) migrating overhead, fairly high up.
Reminded me of an unorganized mass of geese or brant. But they were
mainly gulls, noticed a couple BONAPARTE'S from the black heads,
believe there were also a few CASPIAN TERNS but not sure. Birds very high
up, estimated around 300-400.

Tschache Pool was crazy. Too many birds, just one birder with 2 eyes.
Very distant, there were many many gulls. Saw several BONAPARTE'S
GULLS among the normal common ones. I also had 2 BLACK TERNS
coarsing around back there. This is the earliest I have ever had them.
There were also swarms of swallows again, many perched in the reeds,
many in the air. Had BARN, TREE, BANK, ROUGH-WINGED and
few PURPLE MARTIN. There were so many swallows I bet there
were probably a few CLIFFs but I did not get on
any. Also had 2 CASPIAN TERNS flyby. There were also still some
lingering divers...RINGED NECKED DUCKS and REDHEADS.
Many many GREEN-WINGED TEAL, GADWALL, AMERICAN
WIGEON and also heard another SORA, again no playback.

East road I added NORTHERN PINTAIL and RUDDY DUCKS.
There was also a large flock of DOUBLED CRESTED CORMORANTS
flying by and I counted 7 CASPIAN TERNS loafing with a few other
RING-BILLED and HERRING GULLS.

From Lake Road, had several EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, SAVANNAH
SPARROW and my FOY BOBOLINK.

Myer's-  LEAST SANDPIPER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS (many) and of course KILLDEER.  Had
2 COMMON LOONS migrating up the lake and 2 COMMON MERGANSERS
fly by low.
