Fred Bertram reports"Could someone post this on cayugabirds for me,I
cannot from this device. There is a juv rth on sand road northeast of
aurora that is down, it has no eyes. I have tried several contacts without
success , it is 100 yards south of gully road on the east side. Thanks, moe

[cayugabirds-l] downed Red-tailed Hawk

Hi All, Sorry I could not handle this myself, but I had radiation 
therapy today. Here is a link to a photo of the downed RTH near Aurora. 
Very sad to see. It was 100 yards south of Gully Rd., on the east side 
of Sand Rd.. If anyone is in the neighborhood and can help it out I 
would appreciate it very much.  Fred Bertram

[cayugabirds-l] MNWR, Fri 8/9

On our way to Buffalo on Friday, Tilden and I stopped at Knox-Marsellus
Marsh at around noon.  We watched mostly from Towpath Road.  Through the
first gap, we saw a large juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON perching in a tree
across the marsh.  We also saw a lot of BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS flying
around, plus two at rest.  Only a third of the way down the road, where the
potholes are like muddy kettle lakes, we decided to turn around, lest we get
stuck.

 

As usual, the landscape and birds are spectacular at East Road, but it's
hard to identify and enjoy individual birds because they are so far away.
In about 15 minutes, we saw the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, a few dozen BLACK
TERNS, many herons and egrets, and hundreds of shorebirds, including a
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, some PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, a probable BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, maybe 25 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS (distant flocks identifiable on the
basis of slower wingbeats, I learned), and many yellowlegs and smaller
Calidris.  The Peregrine Falcon made one pass over the marsh, sending all
the smaller birds scattering dramatically across the vast space.  Unseen
BOBOLINKS clanked musically throughout our visit.

Hi All, Thanks for the help, the RTH is now at the rehabbaerin Sterling. 
It appears that its nictitating membranes were down ( collision with 
car?). She said the bird was starving and looks to be otherwise ok!

[cayugabirds-l] Knox-Marsellus this afternoon

>From the Knox-Marsellus overlook this afternoon I found the Wilson's Phalarope 
>and two Black-bellied Plovers along with other shorebirds that have been 
>reported recently.  Then something put everything up in the air and I couldn't 
>find the BBPLs.  I didn't look for long though because it started to sprinkle.
