[cayugabirds-l] Field Trip Sunday

2014-02-07 Thread bob mcguire
I will lead another impromptu Cayuga Bird Club trip this coming Sunday. Meet at
the Lab of O at 8 am. We will be back at around 2 pm. I plan to look for all
the good winter birds. Beginning with gulls & grebes on the lake, a snowy owl
(if anyone has not yet seen one), larks/longspurs/buntings in the fields, and
then some ducks. I AM open to suggestions.

[cayugabirds-l] East Shore Park and NE Ithaca, Fri 2/7

2014-02-07 Thread Mark Chao
Just before midday on Friday, I saw a large, powerful dark bird fly from the
south end of Cayuga Lake eastbound over Route 13. Eyes on the road, I
didn't get a great look, but I think it was a BALD EAGLE.

When I arrived at East Shore Park a couple of minutes later, the gulls were
still swirling. I never saw the eagle again, nor any owls or rare gulls.
But the ducks continue to create quite a spectacle there, with hundreds of
Redheads, many Canvasbacks, both scaup species, Common Goldeneyes, Common
Mergansers, and others. Perhaps most notably, I counted 36 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS (scope needed for half-decent viewing).

We missed it during a couple of the coldest days last month, and also on
January 30, but otherwise, the EASTERN SCREECH-OWL been appearing daily in
its nest box in our yard in northeast Ithaca. Over the past two weeks, it
has tended to spend a lot more time in view during the day than in late
fall.

Today, the owl was moved not only to bask, but also to trill a few times in
the bright midday sun. This was my first time ever watching an owl
vocalizing in broad daylight. I managed to get this photo of the bird in
mid-trill.

[cayugabirds-l] Gulls heading to dump

2014-02-07 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,
Just about 15 minutes ago I witnessed hundreds of gulls heading to Cornell
compost dump from the lake. I scanned for white-winged gulls but could not find
any. I missed earlier several hundred gulls before starting the scan with
binoculars. All the gulls from the lake seemed to be going at the same time,
I thought it is interesting. In the afternoon I see them flying back to the
lake not as one big group but as smaller groups. So who (leader) and when they
decide to fly to the dump? When they do return from the dump? I will try to
keep watch in future to see if they have any particular time.

Cheers
Meena

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Gulls heading to dump

2014-02-07 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
There are no leaders in bird flocks.

All the gulls are hungry and will head to the compost in the morning, around
the time that the truck brings in the food from the dorms. Each gull gets food
as it can, and if they are satisfied, they often head back to the lake to loaf
instead of hanging around the compost. So, everyone has the same motivation in
the morning, but not in the afternoon, and their actions vary more in the
afternoon.

Kevin
