[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese, Fox Sparrow, Rusty Blackbirds

2014-03-22 Thread Andrew David Miller
Watching the movement of snow geese from my office in the Veterinary Research
Tower today has been quite interesting. Almost all flocks have made a wide arc
northeast (coming from the direction of Mt. Pleasant) of the tower that brings
them over Cayuga Heights and then they drop down toward the lake. Only 2
flocks that I have seen so far have stayed straight flying north. Estimated at
least 3000 birds have flown past since 10AM.

This morning at our house in Freeville we had 1 fox sparrow, 17 Rusty
blackbirds, and 3 grackles. The grackles have been back for about a week, but
this is the first we have seen of the blackbirds and the fox sparrow. 2 male
and 1 female purple finch have also returned to the feeder after being gone for
much of the winter.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowstorm @ Potatoes Building

2014-03-22 Thread Suan Yong
Enormous gathering (~10k if not ~100k) of snow geese in the mucklands of
Savannah, SE and SW of the Potatoes building. Not terribly close to the road,
but close enough during a big repositioning event to just make you stare in
awe. With them are many swans, and a good sized flock of pintails not far to
the south of the road.

On the drive up, popped into Great Gully south of Union Springs and was
surprised to be greeted by a FOY eastern phoebe, as well as a very ratty
looking sapsucker.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant goose and other migration

2014-03-22 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
I decided to check the migration from Mt. Pleasant today between 10:30 and
12:30. Flocks of geese filled the sky in every direction, but not as
concentrated as yesterday's mid-day movement. I suspect that I missed much of
the movement, especially of Snows as many flocks passed over as I headed up the
mountain, and numbers diminished during the time I was there. Most of the
larger flocks were well to the west of Mt. Pleasant, but many directly over the
observatory at Mt Pleasant as well -- and as they fought the stiff NW wind,
birds were often quite low.

Overall, I had roughly equal numbers of CANADA GEESE (11,800) and SNOW GEESE
(9000) -- but 2000+ of the SNOWs were in a stubble field farther east on Mt.
Pleasant Rd. I found a pair of ROSS's GEESE together in this flock, but they
all took off before I could attempt photos. I also saw at least 6 CACKLING
GEESE among the large flocks of Canadas -- observing relative size was
difficult in some flocks, as many were mixed Canadas and Snows.

Other birds of interest passing by were 8 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 4 TUNDRA SWANS, 1
adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK (large brown, streaky,
big-chested), several hundred COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and
AMERICAN ROBINS, and 3 AMERICAN PIPITS. a flock of 10 KILLDEER was in a field
across from the observatory, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS flushed when the large Snow
Goose flock took off.

It was very difficult scanning in all directions, and fighting the strong gusty
winds, so I'm sure I missed many birds!

There was obviously a big flight of TUNDRA SWANS last night and today. I saw a
total of 15 TUNDRA SWANS migrating today in smaller groups than the geese. In
addition, one birder found at least 36 TUNDRA SWANS in one part of Broome

unprecedented for down here.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra swan pair visits Stevenson Rd Compost

2014-03-22 Thread Anne Clark
Today around 1300, a pair of tundra swans was walking around on the ice of the
pond at the Compost Facility. One had a strongly drooped left wing. But as i
sat, getting my camera out, they took off and they both flew well, south, then
turning west toward the Lake.

Not a match for the many swans others have seen, but an unusual (first for me)
bird at the Compost!

Song sparrows also singing out there.

[cayugabirds-l] CBC field trip around the lake

2014-03-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

Six hardy souls joined me on the trip around Cayuga Lake.

We started at Diary Bar, where we heard a Robin singing made us feel it is
spring and warm. A Junco was also singing from the same location. We saw and
heard a Killdeer circling above our head, while some of the Common Grackles
were making their presence known.

We headed to Stewart Park as a couple of members mistakenly showed up at Lab of
O, so we planned rendezvous at Stewart Park. We did see birds from here but
they were half a mile away. So we decided to go East Shore Sailing Park.

From here the view was much closer and ducks looked beautiful through the
scope, but as it happened we were showered with freezing rain while we were
here. But we did have some nice views of lots of Redheads, American Widgeons,
Ring-necked Ducks, Scaups, both Common and Hooded Mergansers, one Northern
Shoveller, three Green-winged Teals and two Goldeneyes. We also had a singing
Song sparrow here. Then someone thought they saw an Eurasian Widgeon, but it
turned out to be a false alarm. I did search for it but I did not see it
either. But we were satisfied with the great looks we had of all those ducks
so we decided to try Myers Marina.

Myers marina was a bit of a disappointment as there were hardly any ducks in
the marina. But out on the lake there were lots of Goldeneyes and other usual
ducks and two Pied-billed Grebes. From there we headed to Myers Point. Only
birds of importance were two Long-tailed Ducks diving close to ice shelf close
to shore. They were so very active, they spent just a few seconds on the
surface and lots of time underwater. On the way to marina there were a couple
of Turkeys in the field. Later near Jerry springer road we saw about 50 Turkeys
and many of the males were displaying.

Then as my usual practice, I went to Center Road to look for larks and
buntings. Except for two Horned Larks and a Redtail we did not see any birds.

Along Long Point State Park road we heard some chickadees, tufted titmouse and
a Carolina Wren. From the shore we had some distant Red-breasted Mergansers and
other usual birds.

At Union Spring pond we had two Horned Grebes and same usual ducks but in fewer
numbers.

Harris's Park was excellent place to look at a few Red-breasted Mergansers,
both males and females and lots of Canvasbacks! Previously in the morning we
watched on male Canavasback dive along with dabblers and geese in a narrow
patch of water at Stewart Park, he looked very odd among those groups. But I
guess he was finding something, as he was actively diving to eat something
juicy! At Harris's Park we also watched an adult eagle fly around several
times. There is big nest on one of the electrical poles, we do not know whose
nest it is. We will find out soon I guess.

We next stopped at the Mud lock where we saw a head in the eagle's nest, so
that means they are still incubating or may be brooding the young! Chris
pointed out to me a swallow trying to get something off of snow/ice patches.
Then later we saw three Tree Swallows.

Further on we headed to Mucklands. Here it was fun as the sky was filled with
birds. There was huge group of Snow geese trying to land and were not decided
yet they wanted to land or not so they milled around a bit before landing. The
sun was out at that time. So it was spectacular view! Some Tundra Swans were
taking off and others landing. Canada Geese were milling around. Then there
were thousands of Pintails everywhere. We also had a very good look at one of
the Horned larks.

Then we headed to west side of the lake. We saw the same ducks, but much closer
from the north end of the Lake Road. Two Bald eagles that flew over Harris
Park area made all the ducks take to flight and it was spectacular to see so
many ducks in the air. Southern part of the Lake Road was still frozen so no
birds were to be found. So we decided to take the inner route to look for snow
geese and snow buntings.

We took Farron road, where we saw hundreds of Pintails in the snow melt puddles
along with swans and geese. At some point there was huge pure flock of Pintails
in the air. We drove via Hoster Road and Kuneytown road but we did not find
anything else of interest. At this point we had enough of ducks and geese so we
decided to call it a day!

Overall it was very windy day, but we still enjoyed the birds with freezing
hands and butts!

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Herons

2014-03-22 Thread W. Larry Hymes
While traversing Upper Buttermilk Park (muddy, icy), I was surprised to
find 2 GREAT BLUE HERON flying about the Lake Treman area together.
There is some open water there, and 11 Canada Geese were also present.
I assume the two birds were a pair that was checking out this area as a
possible nest site.

[cayugabirds-l] OOB: Montezuma and beyond

2014-03-22 Thread cl...@juno.com
Driving up to Oswego Friday late afternoon we noted large gathering of Snow
Geese on Cayuga Lake just south of Aurora. At Mud Lock there were over 100
swans + Canadas. Oswego marinas (Sat. afternoon) featured nearly 100 pairs
Greater Scaup and some Lesser, also several pairs Common and Red-breasted
Merganser. Saw several individual Great Blue Herons at various points along
Oswego River as we drove south towards Fulton. Colleen Richards
