[cayugabirds-l] Willow Ptarmigan
I last saw the Willow Ptarmigan at 1 PM along South Shore Extension (a 1/2 mile long dead end off S. Shore Rd). It was on the beach side of the road about 1/2 way down towards the end. It had moved down the road from it’s earlier position. Best way to get there is to take rte. 57 to South Shore Rd, follow that down the west side of the peninsula. Where the road makes a left turn, the S. Shore Extension turns right. Please use care parking walking, that is all private property. Photos available on facebook (go to the Eaton Birding Society facebook page). Also had Savannah Sparrow, E. Meadowlarks, Am Kestrels, Rough-legged hawk, red-tails, and a snowy owl in the area. [cayugabirds-l] Dean's Cove osprey
Returned to Union Springs from Ithaca via Rte 89 today. If someone reported this nest, I failed to see it. *#22* ...*_Dean's__Cove_* a smidgeon north of Dean's Cove on the west side of 89. Bird on the nest one flying. This nest was there last yr.. */Seneca Falls Country Club entrance/*: Along Rte. 89 south of Cayuga Lake SP. I saw the nest on the NYSEG platform but didn't see any visible bird. If someone else is in that area can confirm, please do. This nest was mentioned earlier by someone else as one a person said was an eagle nest. At Harris Park I saw an osprey dive into the water. When it surfaced it just floated like, in profile, actually looked like a gull. It sat on the water a few seconds but then began a delightful bathing routine, like a duck after mating, flapping its wings dipping its head under the water. Twice it flew a few ft. above the water then dove back down under the water surface before finally flying off to the south. Nature is so wonderful, so full of unexpected surprises. Gas on 89 near the state park was $3.60.9, lower by 9 cents than at Union Springs Lakeside Trading.
