[cayugabirds-l] Killdeer @ Myers
Don't remember this having been reported at or since the CBC, but there's a killdeer in the gravel island of salmon creek by Myers - or there was until the hunters started firing nearby. I don't see it anymore, but can hear it calling from nearby somewhere. Also, lots of bluebirds near the salt point entrance. At least 3, maybe 5, American Pipits foraging invisibly on the beach on the north side of Salt Point (flushed there by me from closer to the point). Still struggling to photograph them. [cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes in Savannah
Had a pair of Sandhill Cranes at the Sandhill Crane Unit (Montezuma) on the south side of Van Dyne Spoor Rd around sunset Saturday. Also had a group of over 2 dozen Swans that appear to be Trumpeters. Photos available on Eaton Birding Society’s facebook page. (No Short-eared Owls seen, but several N. Harriers were flying around, along with lots of ducks & Canada geese). [cayugabirds-l] Pipits @ Salt Pt + others; Ravens
I met Suan at Salt Point after his Pipit post below. He said there were 7 AMERICAN PIPITS according to his heat sensing device/screen, and that they are very hard to see against the dull colored lake-bed rocks on the shore edge. I later saw one on the north side near the point. Never found the others. Then I saw 7 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS which landed near and on a small frozen pond on the north shore lake bed of Salt Point. Neat to see a lovely bright male Bluebird standing on the snow-covered ice! Also saw N. CARDINAL, RED BELLIED WOODPECKER, 3 BLUE JAYS, 4 E. STARLINGS, 4 A. CROWS, and several RING BILLED BULLS, along with a group of intrepid, scope-lugging birders across Salmon Creek near the point of Myers Park. Later on Asbury Road near the end of Collins Rd. I saw 2 COMMON RAVENS fooling around way out in a large farm field. One was doing that amusing hopping, following after the other as it walked away. [cayugabirds-l] Cowbirds
Peter, On the afternoon of 5 January Ann Mitchell & I saw a flock of about 25 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, males & females, on the shoulder of Fenner Rd near NYS-34B, which is in the northwest corner of the Town of Lansing in Tompkins County. They were not present during a couple of more recent visits. They were first-of-year for both of us. I think the cowbirds wander. Several MOURNING DOVES were also on the road shoulder that day, but they flushed separately and did remain in the area. We also saw a few HORNED LARKS elsewhere along Fenner Road that day, and today we saw some just north of Fenner on Davis Rd. --Dave Nutter PS - Apologies to those who found this message redundant. After I first sent it to CayugaBirds-L I realized it was in the form which turns to garbage on some people’s email (including Peter’s!) and on the digests and archives, so I this time it is in a form that I hope is legible all those ways. I’m trying to get in the habit of sending messages to Cayugabirds in this more universally readable way, but sometimes I forget. [cayugabirds-l] Mute Swans, northern Cayuga L betw Harris Park & Lower Lake Rd
Today (Saturday) some of the intrepid birders whom Donna Scott mentioned went to various places in the Cayuga Lake Basin, mostly trying to find birds which were previously reported and managing to overlook those which had not yet been reported. However a species which appears to be new for the year for the basin is MUTE SWAN of which I (and Diane Morton, Ken Kemphues, Bob McGuire & Ann Mitchell) saw 3 swimming near the western ice edge north of Cayuga Lake State Park (Seneca County, Town of Seneca Falls). We were scoping from Harris Park in the Village of Cayuga on the east side (Cayuga County, Town of Aurelius). I’m glad to hear we had an excuse for overlooking the American Pipits even though we thought about them - we lack infrared vision! —Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

I posted some photos of today's pipits, including the infrared image, on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/suan.yong/posts/10208622363774511 If you can't see the IR image, I posted it here too: https://flic.kr/p/CrsRQa I did eventually see all seven fly together a short distance.
