[cayugabirds-l] White-throats

2016-04-27 Thread W. Larry Hymes
As of this past Friday, we've been having large numbers of
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. Since Monday we've conservatively had 45 in
our yard. Before last Friday, we had been having very large numbers of
JUNCOS -- as many as 60. When the White-throats migrated in Thursday
night, the bulk of the Juncos coincidentally migrated out (don't like
each other?!?!?). I've been making sure to keep the lawn at our back
feeders well supplied with white millet.

Today we had our first of the year WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. It looked a
bit perplexed being surrounded by the large number of White-Throats
everywhere.

We report our yard lists on e-Bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk

2016-04-27 Thread Geo Kloppel
On Monday afternoon I came across a Broad-winged Hawk on Station Road (West
Danby), just below the State Forest / Land Trust boundary. It was perched in a
tree above the small stream there, in a typical hunting situation, so I would
guess it's a local, newly returned from Veracruz or wherever...

[cayugabirds-l] Wednesday Birds

2016-04-27 Thread bob mcguire
After a pleasant walk around Salt Point with Stu Krasnoff this morning (3
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS across on the spit at Myers and a single BONAPARTE’S GULL,
several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 2 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, mockingbirds, blue
birds, tree & barn swallows, pileated & downy woodpeckers, flickers), I headed
down to Lindsay-Parson’s Preserve in Danby.

Parking by the fire station, I and walked up to the new water tower. An
OVENBIRD sang several times to the north. A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER
foraged overhead in a couple of hemlocks, singing one of its alternate songs.
Two BLUE-HEADED VIREOS sang intermittently upslope in the distance, and a
BLACK-AND WHITE WARBLER gave two songs before flying off at the tower. There
were still good numbers of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. And, as Geo has reported, at
least 8 GREAT BLUE HERONS are nesting in the pond along Sylvan Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird at Sapsucker Woods East Trail

2016-04-27 Thread Diane Morton
This morning Ken and I took a walk at Sapsucker Woods, starting at the East
Trail. We heard then saw, an Ovenbird singing near the trail just beyond
the Woodleton boardwalk -- our first of year.

We also saw Northern Waterthrush at the Sherwood Observation platform, and
heard another singing later from the Woodleton area. We also saw Yellow
and Yellow-rumped warblers on the Wilson Trail, and also saw Cooper's,
Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged Hawks. Some of the Ruby-crowned Kinglets
came close enough for us to see the little sliver of red on the crown.
