[cayugabirds-l] busy yard this am
Between 8 and 9 this morning, our yard was invaded by a flock that included a FLICKER, 8 ROBINS, 4 STARLINGS, and all the usual suspects. Not a lot of birds but perhaps the remnants of a migratory fallout last night? The starlings were squabbling over a hole in the trunk of a maple. No birds have EVER used the hole for shelter or nesting, so the starlings were just being starlings, fighting over something just to claim ownership. Regarding Karen's crow story, I have seen the same activity on Cayuga View Rd in TBurg in past years. The impression I got was that it was a convenient spot to have a conversation. No refreshments served, no minutes recorded, just the local gossip. [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Loon Watch
Hi All - Just a reminder that I will be leading a Loon Watch at Taughannock Falls State Park this Sunday, November 13, 2016 beginning at 6:20 AM. We will assemble on the south side of Taughannock Creek at its confluence with Cayuga Lake. Depending on the number of participants, we may break into two groups in order to maximize our coverage of migratory routes. Last year we had a banner day with +1,000 Common Loons and a couple of Red Throated Loons. Yesterday, while closing my cottage for the season, I scanned the lake from my front yard on the west shore near Camp Barton. My high count was 168 Common Loons. My guess is that at this vantage point I can view about 8 square miles of lake surface or approximately 12% of the total surface of Cayuga Lake. This would suggest there could be +2,000 loons currently on the lake……but then, who’s counting! See you Sunday. [cayugabirds-l] Crow roost descended
Over the past few weeks, a large roost of crows has formed in the woods off Lansingville Rd just uphill and west of my house on Salmon Creek. Mid- morning they stream east in loose groups. But this morning, hundreds have dropped into the cleared cornfield on Salmon Creek Rd, and the many have made their way to the road itself, where they seem to be pecking at the compressed gravel and overturning dead vegetarian along the shoulder. There were at least 60 or more on the road directly in front of my house, scattering when a car comes by, and then reconvening. Thoughts on this? I'm enjoying the entertainment. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
