[cayugabirds-l] like "The Birds," large flock of Starlings nr West Danby ~08:50

2018-03-01 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
We just had a large flock of Starlings come through just north of West
Danby ~8:50. It was like a scene from "The Birds." The lawn was black with
birds.

Then about 09:00 a smaller group of several dozen came through.

Yesterday, Wed, was when we actually got 6 RWB instead of just one or two.
The fields are alive with the sounds of RWB.

2018-03-01 Thread Laura J. Heisey
There was flock of at least 150 blackbirds in Newfield ~7:00 this morning. I
saw Grackles and Starlings, and maybe heard a few Red-Winged Blackbirds in the
mix.

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Ducks

2018-03-01 Thread Geo Kloppel
This morning at 6:15 a couple of Wood Ducks short-hopped over the ridge behind
the West Danby Fire Station to visit my pond. They were about to hit the water,
but aborted at the last moment when they spotted me.

Turkeys are gobbling. We could see a foot of snow in the next 48 hours.

[cayugabirds-l] Weekend bird walks at Sapsucker Woods

2018-03-01 Thread Linda Orkin

Hey All,

Just a reminder weekend bird walks at Sapsucker Woods will be taking place this
weekend although please be sure to check cayugabirdclub.org for any changes in
case the “blizzard” persists.

Migration has begun, as in these past days we have welcomed Redwing Blackbirds,
Song Sparrows, Wood Ducks, Grackles and others. Resident birds are singing
loudly and clearly.

Please come on out. Dress warmly and wear winter footwear. These walks are good
for any level birder but we’re always especially excited to share the joys of
the bird world with beginners.

8:30 Saturday and Sunday. Meet at the Visitors Center Cornell Lab of
Ornithology, binoculars available for loan.
