[cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-03-19 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Reported fishing off shore by Lansing Station Rd, 700 house #s area. (Lansing,
Cayuga Lake)
Neighbor who reported it, thinks a pair nests in woods north of junction of
Algerine rd. & Lans. Stat. Rd.
She watched a pair flying that direction repeatedly while she kayaked last
summer!

[cayugabirds-l] Eurasian G-W Teal & Hybrid Goose

2018-03-19 Thread M Miller
In among the numerous Canada Geese at the Montezuma Visitor Center, I had a
couple cackling geese & a hybrid Snow/Canada Goose (photos on Eaton Birding
Society facebook page). Also had what appears to be a snow goose in the mix
(had it’s head down the whole time). The duck variety included pintails, Am
wigeon, Shovelers, wood ducks, black ducks, mallards, green-winged teal, and a
Eurasian Teal. A couple Trumpeter Swans also flew over. Had trumpeter & tundra
on Morgan Rd Sunday, along with 4 Sandhill cranes.

Mark Miller

PS

Still seeing a few Snowy Owls at the finger lakes airport (Seneca Falls).

Two other large rafts further south. Interesting that very little was on
Seneca as we birded the west side and park at the North end. All the
usual hot spots were devoid of waterfowl.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-03-19 Thread Nancy Cusumano
Hi Candace,

There’s an osprey nest, at least there was last summer, across the lake from
the one you are talking about but it’s on private property. It is just south of
Taughannock st Park, and just south of a home my neighbors have. It is by no
means the tallest tree, though, as the lake shore cliff rises above it. They
were feeding young when we were there last August. Lots of ospreys around these
days, so good to see.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-03-19 Thread Candace Cornell
I'd love to find that osprey's nest—I have been looking for a few years.
Ospreys don't nest in woods, but in the open where they can see 360 degrees
to spot predators—eagles and great horned owls. So if you are looking for
the nest, look in fields or on a cliff face in the area. There can not be
any trees around that are taller than the nest.

PLEASE let me know if you find it!

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Herons

2018-03-19 Thread Dave Nutter
Today’s sign of spring for me was a close trio of GREAT BLUE HERONS flying
north this morning above Floral Avenue. They have seemed very scarce to me this
winter, and these were my first in Ithaca.
