The Oriole was really enjoying the suet feeders today. That's a first for
my feeder. I did place a half of an orange on our feeder. No interest in
the orange <3

[cayugabirds-l] Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest update

2020-05-03 Thread Mark Chao
Every Memorial Day weekend since 2006, I’ve led the Finger Lakes Land Trust
Spring Bird Quest (SBQ) to draw attention to the Land Trust’s role in
protecting vital habitat for the birds we love. Over the years, hundreds
of birders have joined me on dozens of walks, raising tens of thousands of
dollars to support the Land Trust’s work.

Regrettably, the pandemic will make it impossible to hold our usual SBQ
group walks this year. Still, I will try to go out myself and with my
family throughout the month, including Memorial Day weekend. I hope all of
you will be able to get out on your own too, and to share your reports here
(or directly with me if you are too shy to share with the whole list).

Of course the Land Trust and I understand that we are all facing profound
new challenges in meeting the needs of our families and community in these
deeply troubled times. Still, as I carry out my modified SBQ efforts, I
will still welcome pledges and direct donations in support of the SBQ.
Feel free to reply to me if you would like to make a pledge per bird
species I find this month on Land Trust preserves, or visit the Land
Trust’s website to donate any specific amount: https://www.fllt.org/donate/.

Thank you very much for your consideration. I am deeply grateful to so
many of you for your loyal support of me and the Land Trust over the years,
and also for your excellent company during our walks. This year, even as
we keep our physical distance, I hope we can still enjoy and share the
birds and these wonderful preserves with each other. And I hope you will
join me in remembering that the birds still depend on protected land, which
in turn depends on the Land Trust, which in turn depends on us.

With my thanks and best wishes to all,

Mark Chao

PS. In a related development, next Saturday, May 9 is Big Day for Team
Sapsucker of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Starting at midnight on the
Big Day, the team finds as many bird species as possible in 24 hours to
raise funds in support of the Lab. This year, Team Sapsucker was planning
to split up across Nebraska and Argentina to highlight grassland bird
conservation. But because of the pandemic, Team Sapsucker decided to bring
Big Day home to the Finger Lakes. The team will be focusing heavily on
Land Trust preserves. Look to eBird next week to see what Team Sapsucker
finds. (Already eBird is far busier than I’ve ever seen it in Tompkins
County, with lots of checklists and great birds at Land Trust properties.)

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Oriole

2020-05-03 Thread khmo
It seems Orioles descended upon the Mecklenburg area this noon. We are
just uphill and southwest of Ken's. While watching and adult male
Baltimore on an orange we almost dropped our lunch when, at first blush
a bird that looked like a very lost male Audubon's Oriole flew in to
displace the first. In and out of the Quince bush of course but Sue
finally got a few decent shots confirming what we believe to be a very
unusually yellow Baltimore Second year male with full black hood. To add
to the excitement we also had Western Palm, Yellowthroat and House Wren
arrive today. Yellows, Blue-headed Vireo and Catbird yesterday following
the Friday White-crowneds which were singing this morning. (eventually
will post the yellow oriole on my FB page).

[cayugabirds-l] American Bittern/Shindagin Hollow State Forest

2020-05-03 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all
I walked along Shindagin a hollow Rd this morning from north to south, from
where the pavement ends to the balsam swamp and back. Pretty quiet relative to
what it will be in another week. The highlight was an American Bittern foraging
in the open at the balsam swamp. I’ve never seen one there before.
  A fair number of ovenbirds!
The list I submitted to eBird is below.
Fantastic morning!

[cayugabirds-l] birds at Lindsay-Parsons - including Golden-winged Warbler

2020-05-03 Thread Diane Morton
Ken and I went to Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve for a few hours
this morning and found many warblers. Near the kiosk at the start of the
trail, we both saw a warbler fly into a small tree. It had a prominent
yellow patch on the wing. The bird was gray overall, with white at the side
of the throat. We could not see the top of the head. And then it flew off.
We looked in vain for some time to see if we could refind it, but did not
succeed. We are both convinced that it was a female golden-winged warbler.
We hope others who go to Lindsay-Parsons may be able to find this bird.

It was a great place to find other warblers too; we saw/heard multiple
Blue-winged Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, Yellow, Black-and-White,
Yellow-rumped, and Prairie Warblers and one American Redstart. Both
Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers were at Coleman Lake. Ruffed Grouse were
drumming at two different locations, and two Yellow-throated Vireos were
giving their burry calls.

[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird!

2020-05-03 Thread Sandra Lynn Babcock
Yesterday afternoon while I was gardening I heard a strange, intermittent
squawking. I knew it was a bird I had never heard in my yard, but couldn’t
identify it. I walked around under my trees with my binoculars, until I saw
what appeared to be a heron perched in my maple tree, which abuts a tiny
seasonal pond. It continued to squawk and preen while I angled for a better
view. I was amazed to see that it was a green heron, which eventually flew
away.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Least Bittern

2020-05-03 Thread Magnus Fiskesjo

Congratulations on the birds, and the access to that place. Not sure how to get
there safely? I went once to Michigan hollow (or was it Spencer lake), but the
locals hounded me out of there, menacing me with their hunting crossbows
wielded from their ATV. So, due to safety concerns, I never go in that
direction any more. There isn't any everyman's right to walk in the woods in
this country, only the (very colonialist) idea that private property gives
owners the right to exclude and even shoot 'trespassers', so birdwatching can
be deadly dangerous ... Handle with care.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Least Bittern

Michigan Hollow Marsh (Danby). Least Bittern gave just one good chuckle, well
heard. Virginia Rails grunting, Pied-billed Grebe singing, Northern Harrier
female keeping watch from her favorite spot.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Dawn birds

2020-05-03 Thread anneb . clark
FOY oriole just arrived also and a catbird was quietly exploring scrubby places
outside my window earlier! The mounting house wren tensions are audible. I
think another 2 males might be on site. Look like bees chasing.
