[cayugabirds-l] A new hunter at Hile School Wetland

Heading out on errands at 3pm today, saw an osprey on the largest dead tree 
over north Wetland open water. Then when I returned at almost 5, it was still 
there. Exact same spot. A lovely addition to a grey day on the Wetland.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper’s courting

At 8 this morning a pair of Cooper’s Hawks came through my yard at canopy 
level, doing an elegant side-by-side courtship flight that I’d never seen 
before, with gracefully coordinated swoops and turns. The way they kept 
together instantly made me think of ice dancers!

[cayugabirds-l] new year yard birds

I've been seeing lots of new migrants in the yard this weekend like everyone 
else. I need to get my hummingbird feeder up!

Today, my lunchtime walk about the property turned up a few new birds for the 
year, a couple expected, a couple not:

Nashville Warbler - brief look checking out my very active feeders
Black-throated Green Warbler - singing from the hemlocks up the hill
Osprey - high overhead headed east
Bald Eagle - immature high overhead headed west about 3 minutes after the Osprey

good use of the funds raised.
To everyone who participates individually in the modified Spring Bird
Quests, would it be possible to incorporate the 3rd NYS Breeding Bird Atlas
into your birding if you are not already doing so? This could be done on
either a formal or a casual basis depending on the particular preserve's
relationship to the BBA survey block(s) involved. The resulting data would
likely inform future conservation decisions. If you already use the eBird
Mobile app, it's simply a matter of changing to the New York Breeding Bird
Atlas portal. (https://ebird.org/atlasny/about/submitting-data#changeportal)

     This seemed to be the week the passerines returned. 18 species of Warblers 
plus Vireos and Flycatchers were reported. Now if it will only stay warm for 
more than a day.







Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)






     4/29: A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and a colorful female WILSON’S PHALAROPE 
were seen at Carncross Road. 

     5/2: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was seen on Howland Island. 6 Shorebird 
species including DUNLIN were seen along the Wildlife Drive. 26 BLACK TERNS 
were seen at Tschache Pool.

     5/3: A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was seen from West Loop Road north of Rt. 
31. 3 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen in flight from the Wildlife Drive. A 
CERULEAN WARBLER was found on Howland Island.







Onondaga County






     4/27: A SURF SCOTER was seen on Onondaga Lake from the West Shore Trail. 
It was seen the next day also.

     4/28: A BLACK VULTURE was seen near a residence on Jamesville Avenue in 
Syracuse. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on Onondaga Lake from the West Shore 
Trail.

     5/3: An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Coulter Park in Syracuse. A GRASSHOPPER 
SPARROW was seen along the Butternut Creek Trail in Dewitt. A rare for our area 
adult LITTLE BLUE HERON was found at the Hamlin Marsh on Old Wetzel Road in the 
Town of Clay. It was seen and photographed by many observers.  Also heard here 
was a LEAST BITTERN.







Derby Hill Bird Observatory.






     Derby Hill came to life this week. On the 2nd. 13,753 Hawks were counted a 
majority of which were BROAD-WINGS. In all 32,909 Hawks were counted this week. 
Only 1 GOLDEN EAGLE was seen this week. Other highlights were RED-HEADED 
WOODPECKER, GLAUCOUS GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, SURF-SCOTER and 
WHIP-POOR-WILL.







Oswego County






     4/29: A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Selkirk Shores State Park.

     5/1: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen on Lake Road near Sunset Bay Park. A 
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Sandy Island State Park. A SEDGE WREN was 
heard at the Oswego County Airport . 

     5/2: A SWAINSON’S THRUSH was heard on Toad Harbor Road in Cicero.A PIPING 
PLOVER was seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario. A PINE SISKIN was 
seen at a residence in Hinman Road north of Pulaski.

     5/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the Greenview Golf Course in West 
Monroe. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were seen near the 
SUNY Oswego Campus. A LEAST BITTERN was found at Crossroads Park in Central 
Square. A BLACK VULTURE was seen from Rt. 3 just north of the end of Rt. 104A 
east of Texas.







Madison County

     5/3: 2 FORSTER’S TERNS were seen at Woodman Pond north of Hamilton.

One year ago today I saw my first Golden-winged Warbler at Brookton
Cemetery in Brooktondale.  I returned this morning and to my delight there
he was again.  Had the place all to himself  this year feeding in Spruce
trees.  7:30am.
